Why Bassey Wasn’t Nominated For PFA Young Player Of Year Award Despite Bagging Rangers’ Version

Rangers star, Calvin Bassey, failed to get a nomination for PFA Scotland’s Young Player of the Year award to the disappointment many Gers’ supporters, but there is a cogent reason for the development.

The defender has shone brightly this season in the Gio van Bronckhorst ‘s side, proving that he is a capable player for left-back and centre-back roles.

The 22-year-old Nigeria international has been consistent with his fine form for the Gers, both domestically and in Europe this campaign.

His performances saw the youngster bag the Young Player of the Year award at Rangers’ award ceremony on Monday night, but he doesn’t the opportunity of vying for the PFA Scotland’s version of the award this year as he was not nominated.

And it has left some Rangers’ fans wondering why. The nominations for the award were revealed on Wednesday, with Aberdeen duo of Calvin Ramsay and Connor Barron, Celtic ‘s Liel Abada, and Dundee United’s Ross Graham making the shortlist.

The simple answer is that Bassey is above the requisite age limit for the PFA Scotland Young Player of The. Year award.

The PFA Scotland rules read: “The Young Player of the Year category is voted for across all leagues so any player under 21 years of age on the first day of the season is eligible.”

Bassey was born on December 31 1999, which means he was already 21 before the 2021/22 season started. It means that he is therefore ineligible for the award.
