‘Why Sterling Should Be Made Chelsea Captain’ —Ex-Man City Star

Former Manchester City and England international Trevor Sinclair has urged Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel to name summer signing Raheem Sterling as the club’s new captain.

Sterling left reigning Premier League champions City for Chelsea in a deal worth around £50million.

The 27-year-old moves to the Blues in the prime years of his career and boasts a significant amount of experience at the highest level.

That included 129 appearances for Liverpool, before joining City where he has scored 131 goals and provided 94 assists in 337 appearances for the club.

That tally puts him firmly in the Premier League’s 100 club – an elite group of players to have scored over a century of goals in the English top flight.

And with four Premier League titles to his name as well, Sinclair believes Sterling would be the perfect man to be handed the captain’s armband.

Speaking on the talkSPORT Breakfast, Sinclair said: “I think Raheem Sterling should go in at Chelsea and become the captain.

“If you look at it, he’s vice-captain of England and the only person who you can say has more experience than him is Thiago Silva and he’s getting on.

“You can’t build your team around someone who might be leaving at the end of the season.

“Everyone looks up to him. You hear young players all the time talking about how Raheem Sterling did this and how he helped them with that.

“I think he could go in and be a great captain for Chelsea. He could lead that team to something very special.”

Sinclair went on to explain why he believes Sterling will be an instant hit as a Chelsea player, insisting he will enjoy the best years of his career as a Blues player.

“You’re getting a winner, and somebody who never gives up,” said the talkSPORT pundit.

“He’s won four Premier League titles and I can see Chelsea picking up silverware by the end of the season.

“Chelsea are desperate for an out-and-out winger. They’ve got a lot of No.10s and very samey players, but with Raheem Sterling you know what you’re getting – a player who will get chalk on his heels, get players in a one-on-one situation, take them on and get crosses and shots into the box.

“He’s 27 and his performances will only improve at his age.

“He arrived at Manchester City as a 20-year-old boy and he left as a man, and I do think Chelsea are going to get the best out of him.”
