Axel Witsel said “we’ll see who is top” after Borussia Dortmund’s trip to Bayern Munich after their rivals replaced them at the summit.
Dortmund have sat pretty at the top of the Bundesliga table since September and despite overcoming relegation-haunted Stuttgart 3-1 on Saturday, Bayern replaced them in top spot on goal difference after a 6-0 thrashing of Wolfsburg.
The reigning champions are just two goals better off than Dortmund as the title race looks like going to the wire with only nine matches remaining.
And, while it appears that Bayern now have the upper hand, Witsel seems confident that Lucien Favre’s men can usurp them when the two sides clash at the Allianz Arena on April 6.
“We have to take it game by game,” Witsel told bundesliga.com. “We have to stay tight with Bayern until we go to Munich – after that we’ll see who’s top.”
On being knocked off top spot, the Belgium international added: “I think they’ve scored more goals than us but we have the same points.
We have two or three games before that. We’ll take it game by game and then we’ll see. “We’re still in the race with nine more games to go.
Not everything went our way over the last few weeks, we were missing a bit of luck, we had a lot of opportunities we didn’t score. Today we scored three goals so I think this is really positive for the future.”
