Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye scored goals in each half as Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0, advancing to the FIFA World Cup‘s Round of 16 on Thursday in Vancouver, Canada, Al Jazeera reports.
The Desert Foxes of Algeria are now the fifth African team to be eliminated in the round of 32.
Others who have crashed out are Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, South Africa and Democratic Republic of Congo.
The only African country who won in the first knockout is Morocco, who edged out The Netherlands on penalty shootout.
Ghana, Egypt and Cape Verde will hope to join Morocco in the round of 16 when they take to the field.

In the clash between Switzerland and Algeria, Embolo gave the former the lead in the 10th minute before Ndoye doubled their advantage a minute into the second half.
The result maintained Switzerland’s unbeaten record at the tournament, following two wins and a draw in the first round, where they finished top of Group B.
Switzerland will face either Colombia or Ghana on Tuesday at the same venue, aiming to reach the quarterfinals for the fourth time in their history.
