Mohamed Salah coolly tucked away a panenka penalty as Egypt beat Australia to clinch their first win in a World Cup knockout match, in their round of 32 match on Friday.
The game was decided via penalty shootout with Hossam Abdelmaguid scoring the deciding kick as Egypt made history by beating Australia 4-2 in a shootout to reach the World Cup last 16.
A tense affair in which Egypt and captain Mohamed Salah wasted the better chances had ended 1-1 after 120 minutes in Texas.
Emam Ashour scored in the 13th minute for Egypt, before teammate Mohamed Hany became the first player with two own-goals in the same World Cup tournament, allowing Australia to draw level.
The Pharoahs will face either Argentina or Cape Verde in the last 16.

I’m happy for Mo “Omo Iya” Salah and his team mates.
Mane and Senegal stopped Salah from winning the Afcon in 2023. Then in 2025, it was Mane and Senegal again that halted their progress in the semifinal. They ended up even without a bronze medal, as Nigeria no gree for dem.
But now, the glory that eluded Mo and Egypt at the Afcon is now coming to them in the biggest stage of all, the world cup!
They have done well. They and Morocco have played with the fearlessness and mental fortitude that we expected from African champions Senegal. The Senegalese excelled in Africa, but they failed to keep it going at the world cup.
How far can Mo and the gang go? They will either have an argy bargy with the Argies, or get down and dirty with Cabo Verde. At the moment, it could go either way, as Cabo Verde just equalized against Argie! Can Cabo Verde do the seemingly impossible, and send Messi and the Argies packing? Now, that right there is a Jamb question.
We’ve seen a lot of goals at this world cup, and a lot of interesting goal celebrations.
But my best celebration is Ashour of Egypt’s “big man walk”.
He scores a goal, runs to the corner flag and then does the big man walk.
Big man doings.
Take a bow, Cabo Verde!
The warrior performance from a tiny island nation that captivated the world.
Today’s performance was not a fluke. They’ve been doing it throughout the world cup.
Recall these guys gave Keshi’s Super Eagles a tough time. Then under Rohr, na the same wahala.
We were upset that Nigeria struggled against such a “small” nation. Now we know they may be small in population, but my goodness, dem dey gallant for pitch!
The CV second goal was the stuff of dreams. And the funny thing is the scorer of that goal was playing in the German 3rd division just a year ago!
CV no get big stars. But CV don’t care. What they have in abundance is HCD.
High energy, commitment, and desire.
They played Spain to a standstill in their opening game, and today, they pushed Messi and company to the very brink!
Unfortunately for CV, most of their players are over 30 yrs old, so they may not be able to keep this squad for much longer. But as long as this squad remains together, this is one team nobody wants to face!
