Young Coy On Edwards Rumours

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young has refused to rule out the possibility of Shaun Edwards returning to the club.

Edwards worked with the team between 2001 and 2011, joining as a backs and defence coach before being made head coach in 2005.

During his spell the club collected four Premiership titles and the Heineken Cup in both 2004 and 2007, and he has since gone on to work with Wales and the British & Irish Lions.

The 52-year-old is due to switch codes and re-join boyhood team Wigan after the 2019 World Cup but appeared a touch reticent about his future in an interview earlier this week.

Wasps are a coach down this season after Danny Wilson’s decision to take up a contract as part of the Scotland set-up and Young has now hinted Edwards could be an option to join the Ricoh Arena backroom team.

“I don’t want to talk about specific individuals because most of them will be under contract,” he said.

“I’ve made no secret over the last two years that my full attention is on improving the coaching set-up.

“That’s nothing against the coaching group at the moment. I’m really pleased with what our three coaches have done and are doing, but we need more coaches on board.

“We thought we’d brought in one but he got an international call-up, which you can understand.

“But certainly if there are quality coaches available, which we believe will fit into what we’re trying to do to support the coaches and improve the players, if they can help us do that then we’ll certainly look at them.”
