Zidane Plays Down Mourinho Rumours

Coach Zinedine Zidane insists he is not bothered by rumours that Jose Mourinho is poised to replace him in the Real Madrid dugout. Zidane returned to coach Los Blancos towards the end of last season after initially leaving the club following the end of the 2017-2018 campaign but it has not been a happy homecoming.

It seems as though the French tactician did not get the players he wanted during the summer transfer window while Gareth Bale remains at the club despite the manager clearly wanting him to leave.

Things on the pitch have also not exactly gone to plan and, although unbeaten in La Liga, the capital outfit have won two and drawn two of their four games to date.

Europe has been Real’s strong suit in recent years but they made a dreadful start to the Champions League this week, going down 3-0 to an under-strength Paris Saint-Germain side shorn of players such as Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe.

The Spaniards failed to register a shot on target in a Champions League game for the first time in 16 years and pressure is mounting on the boss.

Mourinho is itching to get back to work and, despite brushing off the rumours, is reportedly keen to return to the club he managed between May 2010 and June 2013.

Defeat at Sevilla on Sunday night would see the knives out for Zidane but the former Real player seems unconcerned and will go about his business as usual despite Xabi Alonso also being linked. “I’m not interested in what is said outside the club, the day I pay attention to what’s in the press is the day I leave,” he told reporters on Saturday.

“I will keep trying until the last minute and as long as the club will give me the chance to continue. I don’t feel questioned at all. I’m not bothered by the Mourinho speculation.”
