Nigeria will seek to end their FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup on a high when they battle Germany for the bronze medals in India on Sunday.
Both teams lost their semi final games on Wednesday, Nigeria to Colombia on penalties and Germany to Spain via a last-minute goal by the Cup winners.
Africa’s best team came within a kick of reaching the final during the penalty shootout against Colombia, but defender Omamuzo Edafe’s effort agonisingly came off the upright.
Then Comfort Folorunsho’s kick bounded against the body of the Colombian goalkeeper in sudden death and the South Americans prevailed.

Nigeria and Germany squared off in the two teams’ first match of the competition, back on 11thOctober, at the same venue, with the Germans having to battle back from behind following Miracle Usani’s opener for the Flamingos through a a free-kick.
The Nigerian team has remained unbeaten in regulation time since then, defeating New Zealand 4-0 and Chile 2-1, and then prevailing over United States of America on penalty shootout in the quarter-finals after a 1-1 stalemate.
In the semi finals, Nigeria and Colombia finished scoreless before the penalty shootout that eventually turned out in favour of the South Americans.
“The girls gave a very good account of themselves but it was not to be. We have the bronze medal match to contend with and we will throw everything into it,” Head Coach Bankole Olowookere said on Saturday.

You are very correct, but the girls over achieved. They won because of their tenacity, they would go places if well coached. I think to lost to Columbia because of lack of proper motivation and poor team selection. A bronze is not a bad medal they have done well. Thanks to the whole team.
My brother, we would probably have been in the final of this tournament if they had a coach with a more calming influence on the players…..especially as they were approaching the final/decisive kicks against Colombia.
I hope this team is kept together and given a better, well trained coach (someone like a Maureen Madu, Mercy Akide or Perpetua Nkwocha) as they progress into the U20s. This former Olopa just keeps yelling at them as if they are on the parade ground.
If not he should be sent on training for proper tutelage in modern coaching methods…other than just be yelling at 15/16 year old girls as if they are female commandos.

If that was not offside, I don’t know what offside can be then. The officiating is been biased against us like many other aspect of life against whites, look at all the fouls against us, even the one that led to one of their goals. It was not a foul. We were lucky to over come the officiating.

A truly biased referee would have allowed germany’s 3rd minute goal stand and also awarded them a penalty in the 1st half for a trip from behind in the box.

To me the game against colombia i would fault the coach a little bit, this our goalie is way better penalty stopper than the so called penalty saving specialty dat akways runs to one side without diving. The coach in my view should have left omilana in d game against colombia. Also i fault players like ajakaye and emanuel a little too, these are our too poayer (forward) and captain who should have shown courage and stepped up to play the penalties. In big games like dat against colombia is where ur big name players ought to have stepped up. All in all the team did very well and they deserved this bronze but it could easily have been gold or silver. Kudos to the girls for battling till d end. Kudos to the coaching staff as well

Of course there is tension but as a forward who normLly scires goals in games normally it will be 2nd nature to someone like ajakaye. My broda see d way she dispatched her penalty today. Don’t get me wrong ooo, most times penalty na luck but skill dey dia too. A player like ajakaye suppose dey the 1st 5 penalty takers if i were d coach. Especially knowing our centrrback had missed in the previous game against the US. Even d captain emmanuel would be one of the penalty takers, big games need big personality and there are fewer big personalities in dis team than emanuel and ajakaye. I saw some of the penalty before I stopped watching. I Heard omolani saved one later but if you watch the first 3 penalties she is obviously very poor in saving penalty ( I might be wrong though).. did you see the German goalkeeper.. so tall for 17.. wow! I had to stop watching and with kind of tall keeper not saving a penalty shows our girls really practiced penalty taking this Time around.. over confidence made Germany play their penalty over the bar

Its obvious the coach did go into the knock-out stages of this tournament with the mindset of trying to drag the game through 90mins and depend on the lottery of penalties.
And for penalties he had this plan of depending on the substitute GK and his fixated 5 penalty takers and nothing else.
And thank God the rule at this level was that the match goes straight to penalties after 90 mins without a winner, because we obviously would have capitulated if he had to face any of these KO stage teams for an additional 30 mins.
Drey, i will take omilana anyday over dat other goalie. Omilana looks fitter and has better reflexes. Even the penalty shootout against the US she kept running beyond the line not having atleast a foot on d line most times. Penalties is a guessing game so as a goalie just pick a spot and dive there, even if u get sold its ok than just running to one side. She didn’t exude any confidence to me when she was brought on. I kept screaming at the TV in d game against colombia. Any it worked against US and i do understand y the coach elected to bring her on and she did save one penalty against colombia sha but to me i just wasn’t confident in her at all. We where never in camp when they were training for penalties for us to know who responded better in training.
It could be that Jiwaku was proving to be a Dele Aiyenugba in training while Omilana was proving to be Enyeama.
We didnt lose the penalty shootout against colombia because of Jiwaku, we lost because of Edafe and then the other defender whose long walk to the penalty spot already showed a player who was destined to lose that kick.
Congratulations to the girls I just couldn’t watch the penalties.. it was too much for me to take.. I’m glad they did Nigeria proud..
This team have some good players, with raw talent.. ajakeye is my best player for her deadly pace but her final ball needs alot of polishing, probably that was why she was benched in the last match but we paid for it because you can’t keep your best player on the bench in a semi final game.. some of the players should play the next u17 like etim , she will be eligible.. I must commend the following players.. the two central defender, they are solid, oseni, the captain blessing , bello and our solid goalkeeper.. they should be promoted to the u20 immediately and commerce preparation
