2023 AFCONQ: Southampton Laud Super Eagles Win Over Guinea-Bissau

Premier League club Southampton have hailed the Super Eagles after topping Group A in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers following a 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau on Monday, March 27 at the Estadio 24 de Setembro.

Nantes winger Moses Simon scored the only goal of the game in the 30th minute from the penalty spot after Bright Osayi-Samuel was fouled in the box.

Following the game Southampton highlighted the roles of their players Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu in the encounter on the club’s website.

“In the AFCON qualifiers, Joe Aribo was introduced in the 61st minute for Nigeria Super Eagles in their 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau, while Paul Onuachu was an unused substitute in the encounter.

“Nigeria now sit top of Group A, two points clear of Guinea-Bissau with just two games left to play later this year in order to secure progression to the tournament.”

With the win the Super Eagles have nine points after four games while Guinea-Bissau have seven points from the same number of matches.

The 2023 Afcon will take place in Ivory Coast between January and February 2024.

The Super Eagles have won the AFCON tournament three times (1980, 1994 and 2013).

Joe Aribo isn’t that bad. He’s a good player and just unfortunate to be relegated to the reserves in Southampton. His input during the GB game showed his abilities.
