Janet Akekoromowei was named Player of the Match after Nigeria’s Falconets secured a commanding 3-0 victory over England in their Round of 16 clash at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Tosin Rafiu opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a strong contender for Goal of the Tournament.
The midfielder surged down the left flank before cutting inside, skilfully evading the England defence and firing a powerful effort past goalkeeper Katie Cox.

Akekoromowei doubled Nigeria’s lead two minutes after the restart with a superb left-footed volley. The Benfica striker’s effort marked her second goal of the tournament.
Substitute Mary Mamudu completed the scoring 17 minutes from full time, sealing a thoroughly deserved victory for Moses Aduku’s side.
Nigeria will now face the winner of the Poland-Colombia tie in the quarter-finals in Lodz on Sunday.

The Nigerian goalkeeper “Uzoma” was the best player on the pitch!Her heroic was the reason we didn’t concede…
Absolutely, I think they gave the wrong player, Janet, the Woman of the match award. That prize should have gone to Christiana Uzoma in goal for the Falconets for all her brilliant saves, including a well struck Penalty save in the 34th minute to deny England the equaliser. Several one-on-one saves; from crosses and Corner kicks.
Uzoma was superb in goal today, and had she not been replaced in the dying ebbs of the match against New Caledonian in the last Group F match- NC wouldn’t have scored that consolation goal against the Falconets in their 10-1 drubbing.
I also feel Uzoma should take over from Chiamaka Nnadozie, who was very poor at the last Wafcon, especially against Malawi and Cameroon and the WWC play-off qualifier against South Africa Banyana- all matches the Super Falcons lost because of poor goalkeeping by Chiamaka Nnadozie.
