Nigeria’s Falconets will be in high spirits when they face Colombia in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Sunday, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
The two-time runners-up return to familiar territory in Łódź, where history offers them encouragement.
Falconets Have Edge Over Colombia
Nigeria defeated Colombia 1–0 in the semi-finals of the 2010 edition in Germany, securing a place in their first-ever final at a FIFA women’s football tournament.
Ebere Orji scored just two minutes into that encounter in Bielefeld, and the Falconets held on to their early advantage to seal a memorable victory.
That historic run came after another dramatic triumph over the United States in Augsburg. Helen Ukaonu equalised with 11 minutes remaining before Nigeria prevailed in the ensuing penalty shootout, with Ukaonu, Joy Jegede, Esther Sunday and Desire Oparanozie converting their spot-kicks.
Aduku’s Girls In Buoyant Mood
The Falconets head into Sunday’s quarter-final clash with renewed confidence following an impressive Round of 16 performance against England’s Young Lionesses.
Nigeria produced a commanding display to secure a 3–0 victory, with Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu finding the net to send England out of the tournament.
With a semi-final place within reach, the Falconets will be looking to draw inspiration from their memorable 2010 victory over Colombia and take another step towards restoring Nigeria to the latter stages of the competition.
