Briton Nicola Adams has been handed the WBO world flyweight title due to an injury sustained by Arely Mucino. The two-time Olympic champion was the interim champion and mandatory challenger to Monterrey-born Mucino.
They were due to fight in March but Adams had to withdraw after sustaining an injury in the build-up and the bout was rescheduled for later in the year. It would have been Adam’s first shot at a world title but she has now been given the belt by default after Mucino picked up an injury.
The WBO confirmed 30-year-old Mucino was not able to “participate in active competition” after suffering head and ankle injuries. Mucino will be eligible to demand mandatory challenger status when she is passed fit to fight again.
