AFN President Okowa Felicitates Amusan, Brume For Making History At Oregon 2022

The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, early Monday, congratulated golden girl, Tobi Amusan and compatriot, Ese Brume, on their spectacular podium finish at the just concluded 2022 World Athletics championship, at Oregon, United States.

Okowa in a statement, said it was the defining moment for his board following the solid foundation laid for a rejuvenation of athletics in Nigeria after coming on board last year.

Oluwatobilola Amusan made history after she broke the world record in quick succession at the semis and finals of the 100mh, setting a new world record of 12.12secs while Ese Brume followed suit with an impressive 7.02 to clinch the silver in the long jump event.

The duo defied all odds to write the name of Nigeria in golden colours.

An ecstatic Amusan would say after the race: “the goal was to come out and win this. I just did. Honestly, I believe in my abilities, but I was not expecting a world record at these championships.”

And an elated Okowa described the success as a sign of greater things to come in athletics as the world turns it’s attention to Birmingham, United Kingdom, for the Commonwealth Games which flags off this week.

Okowa gave his word that the AFN was ever ready to make Nigerian athletes comfortable by making provisions for their needs as it has been doing since it came on board last year.

Okowa, who is also the Executive Chairman, Delta State Sports Commission, also congratulated members of the AFN board on this historic achievement by Amusan and Brume, enthusing it was happening in their time.
