Akpeyi’s Kaizer Chiefs Lose League Title To Mamelodi Sundowns

Daniel Akpeyi’s Kaizer Chiefs’ hopes of winning this season’s South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) title ended in disappointment, as rivals Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned champions on the final day of the campaign, Completesports.com reports.

Akpeyi was not in action for Kaizer Chiefs after he was ruled out with concussion.

Going into Saturday’s crucial away game against relegation threatened Baroka, Kaizer Chiefs needed an outright win to claim a first league title since 2015.

Unfortunately, they could only draw 1-1 despite taking the lead in the tension-soaked encounter.

Khama Billiat had given Kaizer Chiefs the lead in the 39th minute before Manuel Kambala equalised for Baroka.

On their part Mamelodi Sundowns thrashed Black Leopards 3-0 to emerge champions.

And after the final fixtures on Saturday, Mamelodi Sundowns finished top with 59 points while Kaizer Chiefs ended in second on 57 points.

Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will now represent South Africa in the CAF Champions League next season.

Now no one should come here and say they lost the title because Akpeyi got injured ooo. Since Post-CoVid break, Kazier Chiefs with Akpeyi in goal have been conceding and loosing plus drawing instead of Winning like they were doing before the COVID break. They lost form and Mamelodi picked up hence they lost it at last.

The lost because because they have been very wasteful in front of goal. Since returning from covid break they have been throwing away begging chances, even when it is easier to score. Akpeyi will not score for them, so based on their sudden drop in form they had to loose the title to Sundowns who also struggled after the break but managed to pick form at last 2 or 3 games.

You cannot win matches without scoring and you cannot win titles without winning matches. It is a pity.
