Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has disclosed that Cole Palmer is a special talent, and he is working on building the team to get the absolute best out of him this season.
During his introductory press conference, Alonso expressed immediate admiration for Palmer’s intelligence, decision-making, and special talent.

He highlighted a desire to build a stable team structure that allows Palmer to thrive as a key attacking player.
Following a disrupted 2025-26 season, Alonso is focused on creating a tactical system that gives the 24-year-old freedom in the final third to regain his top form.
“We have had a few training sessions already. From the first day, you can see he’s a special talent, a special player. It’s not easy to have one of those. And you can notice his quality, how he’s able to play, the right decision in the right spot,” he told BBC Sport on Monday.
“So I’m happy that he has come in a good mood, a good mindset to have a great season, and we are really looking forward to getting the best from him.
“If we are able to build a strong team with the proper stability to find the key players, for sure, Cole is going to be one of those key players in the attacking part.”
While Palmer is set to remain a key player for Chelsea, there are question marks over the futures of Argentinian duo Enzo Fernandez and Alejandro Garnacho.

Alonso wants Fernandez to stay, but did not detail the conversation between the pair, while Garnacho seems set to leave the Blues.
“Well the situation is that we have spoken with the sporting directors and there is an interest for him from other clubs,” Alonso added of Garnacho.
“So, let’s see how this develops. But hopefully, it finishes in the best possible way for all parts.”
