An Edges Closer To Maiden PGA Title

Byeong-Hun An says avoiding “silly errors” will be key to coming out on top in Sunday’s final round of the Wyndham Championship. World number 55 An, who is searching for his maiden PGA Tour title, held a one-shot lead at the halfway stage of the tournament and has managed to maintain that advantage heading into the last 18 holes in North Carolina after moving onto -17.

The South Korean made four birdies in a bogey-free round of 66 and if he manages to stay blemish-free on Sunday and win the event, he would become the first player since Lee Trevino (1974 Greater New Orleans Open) to win an individual TOUR event without making a bogey over 72 holes. Asked about his game-plan for the final round, An told the PGA Tour website: “Just keep my head up and my confidence pretty high. I’ve been hitting it pretty good, so need to not make any silly mistakes.

That’s what I’m trying to do.” American duo Webb Simpson and Brice Garnett share second place on -16, one shot off the pace, while compatriot Ryan Armour is a shot further back on -15 after carding a five-under-par round of 65. Paul Casey is flying the flag for England as he sits alongside Norwegian Viktor Hovland and US star J.T. Poston on -14, just three behind the leader, but the world number 19 believes he is too far back to lift the trophy.

“My goal was five (under) a day,” he said. “So, I’ve slipped behind that schedule, but I don’t think it’s going to be low enough. Scoring is so good. The leaderboard is stacked with older guys like myself and younger guys – Viktor’s up there, I see. “I actually haven’t studied the leaderboard thoroughly, but it’s going to be good. Looking forward to it.”
