Barty Shrugs Off Injury Concerns

Ashleigh Barty is confident she will be fit for the China Open despite struggling with a calf injury in Japan. The Australian called for a medical timeout during her Japan Open semi-final defeat at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka on Friday.

The world number one is due to face Yulia Putintseva in Beijing on Monday [match starts Tuesday 4am BST] in the second round of the China Open and Barty remains upbeat on her fitness. “I haven’t been on court since my match in Wuhan,” said Barty.

“We’ll look to get on [a practice] court this afternoon and kind of test it out. “From how it’s been going, it’s been marginally better than we expected, which is good. “I’m sure that we’ll have no issue. It’s just about now ticking the boxes and making sure it’s alright to go.”
