Bournemouth edged past League Two side Forest Green Rovers 3-0 on penalties after being held to a goalless draw in their Carabao Cup second-round tie.

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe made nine changes from the team that lost to Manchester City on Sunday with Callum Wilson and Chris Mepham keeping their places at the Vitality Stadium.

Forest Green boasted five changes from the 1-0 League Two win at Bradford on Saturday with Matt Mills suspended after his red card in that game.

In a fairly low-key first half, Jordon Ibe had a couple of effort saved by Jojo Wollacott, while Harry Wilson was also denied by the Forest Green keeper in the 13th minute.

Jack Stacey had a couple of wayward strikes as he looked for a goal on his Cherries bow and Wilson also went close.

However, it was Rovers who went closest to breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute when Matt Stevens met a Farrend Rawson cross into the area, but his close-range effort was blocked on the line by Andrew Surman.

The visitors went close again 10 minutes after the break when a free-kick from the left was headed down into the path of Junior Mondal, but he lifted his shot over the crossbar from the middle of the area.

Bournemouth upped the tempo in search of a winning goal and Stacey almost obliged with an opener on 73 minutes, but watched his effort from the right of the area hit the far post and the ball somehow rebounded over the crossbar off a defender.

Ryan Fraser then teed up Joshua King in the centre of the box, but his effort was down the throat of Wollacott.

The hosts continued to pile the pressure on in the closing stages with King seeing his close-range header pushed away by Wollacott in the final minute.

In the penalty shoot-out, King converted first for Bournemouth, before Mark Travers saved well to deny Joseph Mills.

Dominic Solanke made it 2-0 to the Cherries and Travers again dived to his left to deny Kevin Dawson.

Ibe then had his spot-kick saved by Wollacott only for Travers to go to his right to deny James Morton and Philip Billing then successfully scored to send the Premier League side through to round three 3-0.
