Dennis Ends Goal Drought As Struggling Watford Beat Villa Away; Liverpool Cut City Lead After Comeback Win

Emmanuel Dennis was the hero for struggling Watford as his goal with less than 20 minutes left earned his side a 1-0 win at Aston Villa on Saturday, Completesports.com reports.

It was Dennis’ first goal in almost two months after last scoring in Watford’s 4-1 home loss against West Ham United on December 28, 2021.

Prior to today’s game he had gone five straight games without scoring.

Also he has now taken his tally in the Premier League to nine goals so far this season.

Dennis scored the only goal of the game in the 78th minute after powering a header past Emiliano Martinez.

It was Watford’s first win since they defeated Manchester United 4-1 in November 2021.

Dennis’ Nigerian teammates William Troost-Ekong and Samuel Kalu were unused substitutes for the game.

Watford still remain bottom in the league table on 16 points six points from safety.

At Anfield, Liverpool came from a goal down to defeat Norwich City.

The win means Liverpool now on 57 points are just six points behind leaders Manchester City.

Norwich took a shock lead on 48 minutes through Milot Rashica but Sadio Mane equalized for the Reds on 64 minutes.

Mohamed Salah then put Liverpool ahead on 67 minutes before Luis Diaz made it 3-1 on 81 minutes.

At Selhurt Park Chelsea kept their Champions League qualification hopes alive after securing a 1-0 win away to Crystal Palace.

The Blues maintain third spot on 50 points thanks to Hakim Ziyech’s 89th minute goal.

And in other results Arsenal continued their push for a top four place with a 2-1 win against Brentford, Alex Iwobi saw 65 minutes of action as Everton lost 2-0 at Southampton while Burnley thrashed Brighton 3-0 away.

I will be surprised if Denis doesn’t make the team for the upcoming world cup qualifier. Our hottest strikers at the moment are: oshimen, Denis, igahalo, umar, onuachu.. the rest should wait till we qualify.

    • Rotexy 2 years ago

Who are the rest outside these 5 you mentioned?

      • Ololo 2 years ago

The rest include; awonyi, olayinka, desser, moffi etc.

Denis is on fire because the epl is the Best league in the world, you are no fluke when You score repeatedly in the epl.. give him the respect he deserves

        • Scoring after close to 7matches is repeatedly? As a striker who play regularly?

          • Be factual dude@Femi. If you are not sure of the exact matches Dennis has played, shut your mouth up.
Dennis had a red card and was injured at a point. Read up what #Sportsfan enumerated below and gain understanding.

For the records, Dennis paired Joshua King in a 4-4-2 formation today vs Aston Villa, and scored the only goal of the match.

Dennis will combine well with Osimhen or Iheanacho in a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 formation for SE or even as a winger. Lookman, Simon, Chukwueze, Ejuke are among the ferociously exciting wingers we have now in SE.

Michael Olise, Amoo, Bassey,Keepers Adeleye & Yemi Oluwa.., et al. are in the database of quality additions to the SE going forward.

          • With his goal against Aston Villa, Dennis has now directly participated in fourteen goals (9 goals, 5 assists) in 22 Premier League appearances.

If club form andis league is your yardstick, how many goals has OSIMHEN scored this season? What division does SADIQ UMAR play? What league does ONUACHU play? What league does SUNDAY SUNDAY Ighalo play for? Upon all the hypes; how many goals does IGHALO have for SE? If he’s good, January window just shut; why wasnt he considered by an EUROPEAN club?

If not for blending issue (Something that affected a certain RICHARD OWUBOKIRI in 1993), based on form and goals scored vis-a-vis competitions, AWONIYI is the leading Nigerian striker this season! And his statistics with SE aren’t bad; 3 matches 1 goal!

No any coach worth his salt will leave out AWONIYI in any SE squad based on his numbers in the last 2 seasons in a tough league like the bundesliga 🙂

You are sick @monkey post and you need deliverance as soon as possible. Do you watch football at all? Do you see his contributions in their matches? Granted he has not been scoring of late but that guy is giving more than 100% just like lookman he is not a regular scorer but he has been playing very well. Pls critisise constructively not just writing trash everytime.

  • Dennis has been a regular for his team and he is playing in a top 5 league. His team are In relegation waters at the moment due to their poor defensive makeup and not being able to put away goal scoring chances.
Dennis is probably their best player, and he is the teams highest goal scorer (I think). So yes he is one of our hottest players given that his team doesn’t have big names and so they have to scrap for every result they get. Even if they get relegated, I dont think they will stay down for long but I hope they dont get relegated because of the large contingent of Nigerian players in the team. But if you dont play well, you will go down. It happened to fulham last season so it can happen to Watford if they are not careful.
My major concern in Watford is Our vice captain, troost ekong not playing since returning from the Afcon and new signing samuel kalu not getting off the bench since he joined the club. I wonder what plans the coach has for both of them.

Four new addition that in my opinion, that should play in that match against Ghana are, Bassey, Bonke, Denise and Lookman. Bonke in particular to play as the defensive midfielder (destroyer) to screen the defence while Ndidi and Aribo play in front of him in a 4.1.2.3 formation. That Menace Denise and Osimene should should play with either of Lookman, Wazza Dazzler Chuzzy, Moses Simon or Ejuke. But I will pick Chuzzy to start because of the Osimene effect/understanding coming from back in their U-17 days. Just my opinion anyway, as Cerezo will always have the final say.

  • I feel most of the players who started games in the last Afcon will start against ghana, with Victor Osimhen being the only likely change upfront. But I would like a situation where either Simon or chukwueze is switched with dennis. And aribo played as a number 10.

All was forgiven to Dennis and as you said, he has got his mojo back now. Watford will survive the regelation fights. Onuachu will be right there against Ghana, so also is Nigerria Ighalo and Lookman, Osimhen may come in later.

The material is there for product manufacture! No excuses! When a country can boast of half a dozen strikers scoring currently in top leagues it is up to Eguavoen and his team to work out a winning strategy for the Super Eagles.
