Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has been appointed interim head coach of Nigeria’s Senior Women’s National Team, the Super Falcons, for their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying fixtures against Comoros in October.1
Eguavoen, popularly known as ‘Cerezo’, will take charge of the team as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) continues its search for a substantive head coach.
The experienced tactician brings a wealth of international experience to the assignment. He previously guided the Super Eagles to a bronze-medal finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Eguavoen will be assisted by Christopher Danjuma, the current head coach of Nigeria Women’s Football League side Nasarawa Amazons. Danjuma has extensive experience with Nigeria’s women’s national teams and led the Falconets at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa will serve as the team’s goalkeeper trainer. Baruwa has worked with several of Nigeria’s national teams, including the Super Eagles, CHAN Eagles, Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets.
Former Super Falcons defender and coach Ayisat Yusuf has also been named as one of the assistant coaches. Yusuf earned 68 international caps for Nigeria and represented the country at four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, three FIFA Women’s World Cups and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The 10-time African champions will begin their Olympic qualifying campaign in the second round against Comoros, with both legs scheduled to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and 13, 2026.
Nigeria received a bye into the second round as one of the three highest-ranked teams in the qualifying competition, while Comoros progressed after defeating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.
The Super Falcons must navigate four rounds of two-legged knockout ties to secure one of Africa’s two available spots at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Should Nigeria overcome Comoros, they will advance to the third round, scheduled for February 23 to March 6, 2027, where they will face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco.
A place in the fourth round would see the Super Falcons take on one of Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic or Mali between October 4 and 12, 2027.
The final round of qualifying is scheduled for November 23 to December 4, 2027. At that stage, Nigeria could face one of Guinea, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Central African Republic, Algeria or Burkina Faso for a place at the 2028 Olympic Games.

Somebody pinch me!
I pinch you. It is not a dream.
So Alozie will listen to tactics from Eguavoen even if it’s interim?
Can’t pig leave the mud after bath?
Even my dad when he heard the news as network news headline said: “Nigeria no dey tire to recycle consistent failures?”
So Ikpeba and co didn’t give way?
Who swear for Nigeria? They are taking us for granted as always but judgement awaits all of them.
It is completely obvious that Nigeria is not ready for any progress at all. How do you bring in someone linked to the Super Eagles missing two straight World Cups and put them in charge of the Super Falcons at such a critical moment? We are just recycling failure. May the Lord have mercy.
Rubbish!!!

I’m shocked.
Here we go again!!!
Hahahahahaha……..In the words of Baba Obasanjo……I dey laugh o..!!!
They have started again with this their interim coach business. This is one of the reasons why we didn’t qualify for the last two World Cups when we had four coaches during 2026 World cup qualifier. PESSEIRO, FINIDI, EGUAVOEN as Interim and finally ERIC CHELLE, every team needs consistency in terms of coaching. Equavoen has never coached any successful team in his coaching career, it was in his interim capacity Nigeria failed to qualify for 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
This man again? No shame at all.
Naija on edge of missing the next Olympic female soccer. Does he not supposed to resign with the other nothing good Nff`?
But honestly, I like this appointment.
By the time Ogun Efon is finished with us, the Super Falcons will watch the Olympics from home.
That way, they can be playing Ludo and Whot together. We need to know who the Ludo and Whot champion is.
Back to back failure to qualify our men for world cup is not enough na. Let him come and finish the destruction with the Super Falcons.
Body go tell us!
Eguaveon, Pinnick and Ladan Bosso will never leave Nigeria alone. Which kind cartel be this squad that keeps lurking around our national teams in different capacity. I had to comment again because e don tire me.
You guys should write this one down, with this man in charge super falcon won’t qualify for Olympic.
For christ sake what did siasia did to nff that makes throw him away like that.
So it is this failure that you guys want to bring again.
I gave up seriously over this nation. Spiritual and physical wikedness in high and low places. What a waste of opportunity.
Haaaa
Danger Danger
Get on the phone
How do you want him to resign with 5000 dollars every month from FIFA as technical director and another free money from NFF as interim technical Coach of Super Falcon. He will never resign even it cost Nigeria qualifying for world cup more than five times because in Nigeria everything is based on selfishness and money and not on general interest. This is our world in Nigeria. Welcome to our world in Nigeria.
As I always say, Nigerians are the major problem of Nigeria in Nigeria, period.
Is Nigeria a failed state? Mba kę, but those running the country are the definition of failure.
Kai, are they not going abroad to see how things are working there, ba?
Do we really love Nigeria as our country, as always claimed, my dear Nigerians?
Eguavoen shouldn’t turn down the offer if he has dignity and self-respect. What a shame.
This is why they don’t take Africans seriously. We are not ready for change. No surprise Nigeria isn’t moving forward; this is one example, kę.
Kai, Mba. Where can we go from this mess Nigeria, as a nation, found itself in? Hmmmm. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
Please, who actually resigned from the NFF if people like Eguovoen, Ikpeba, and Ademola Olajire are still very much around and the decision makers?
Resignation means a clean sweep. These men were the very cogs in the wheel in the background of Nigerian football, and Gusau was just the face.
While we may all not like the idea of Eguavoen, we also need to ask, how many Nigerian coaches have a minimum of CAF A licence and above or it’s equivalent required by caf to be a senior national team coach are in active coaching.
Some of us forget to understand how lazy Nigerian coaches can be.
The best is to look for a stop gap till a solution is found.
It’s just a pity how we get here as a football loving nation, but that is what it is.
Recycling a coach like Eguavoen is just a shame. But by virtue of his position as the NFF technical director means we have no choice but deal with it.
Just unfortunate
i think Gift Monday or Ucheibe will end up as the champion of the whot tournament. E be like say those two sabi play Whot well well.
As for the Ludo tournament, that one is between Ordega and Ajibade.
At least, if our ladies fail to qualify for Olympics, they will have plenty of spare time to play Ludo and Whot. Maybe, they can also play draft (checkers). That is the favorite pastime of the unemployed.
Eguavoen is back in full force. After woeful failure as coach to qualify Nigeria for the 2022 world cup, he continued the tradition of failure with Nigeria’s absence at the 2026 world cup, this time in his role as technical director. Under his watch, Nigeria failed calamitously to qualify for the women’s world cup, for the first time in our history. Na only our women Olympics remain for him to scatter!
Only in Nigeria is failure and incompetence rewarded.
What is Eguavoen still doing there? Is he not a key member of NFF Onigbese? Eguavoen, Blabber Mouth Olajire, and the entire board should have resigned with Gusau. We need a clean sweep in the Glass House.
With the appointment of Eguavone sincerely, it won’t surprise me if Gusau come back as Nff chairman, in this country it is possible for camel to go through the eye of the needle than for a toddler to go into the house through door way.
As far as corruption is concern any strange, abominable and wikedest thing is possible in Nigeria.
Mr failure given another assignment, the man will fail again, disengage this man from Nigeria football, else Nigeria football will continue to decline with series of bad luck.
But wait ooo.
Yinka, if you’re correct, that means Eguavoen has been getting $5000 monthly from FIFA in his role as Technical Director. He’s been in office forever, well it looks like forever, with the immense calamity, pain and suffering his failures and incompetence has brought on us. He was actually appointed on October 20, 2020. That’s 6 years ago.
The publicly reported salary for the charlatan is 3 million naira monthly. that’s 36 million naira per annum. The misfit has been getting 36 million a year since 2020 for doing what? For gross incompetence and woeful failure?
I did not find anything online to confirm Yinka’s claim, but if he’s right, that means Eguavoen has enjoyed 6 years of collecting $5000 monthly from FIFA. He’s also collecting his share of filthy lucre monies shared by NFF Onigbese, not to mention brown envelopes and other briibes, allegedly.
The man must be a billionaire in Naira by now. Eguavoen na Agba Baller!!! Bros eeeh!!! Big man doings!!! On top tax payer’s sweat!!! Enriching himself while failing woefully time and time again on the job!!!
