Exclusive: 2022 WCQ: Why Cape Verde May Pose A Threat To Super Eagles -Akpoborie

Former Nigerian striker, Jonathan Akpoborie believes the Super Eagles will face a difficult challenge against Cape Verde in Tuesday’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the Estádio da Várzea.

Recall that Nigeria defeated Liberia 2-0 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos to move top of Group C after the Super Eagles next opponent, the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde played out a 1-1- draw against Central Africa Republic (CAR).

However, Nigeria will play their World Cup qualification away match against Cape Verde without any of its English Premier League (EPL) stars. Cape Verde is one of the countries listed on the UK’s COVID-19 “red list”, which means Nigeria will be without Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi, William Troost Ekong, Alex Iwobi, among other of their EPL stars.

In a chat with Completesports.com, the former Wolfsburg star lauded the team’s performance against the Lone Stars of Liberia and called for quick attention on Cape Verde game on Tuesday.

“This game is done and dusted. I am indeed delighted with the general performance of the Super Eagles players against Liberia. However, the technical crew must turn their attention on Tuesday’s game against Cape Verde.

“Liberia gave a true account of themselves but Cape Verde may pose a difficult threat considering the fact that Nigeria may miss some of their key players for the away clash due to Covid-19 rule by the UK govt. Well, I am optimistic the Super Eagles will pick the maximum point but they must be very careful.”

  • Bia CSN, what is ‘Exclusive’ about your interviews with Akpoborie and other ex-internationals? I’m not attacking their views (which sometimes I think are bang on), but your abuse and overuse of the word ‘Exclusive’ for these regular, unspectacular, common views they share. Is it a clickbait for you guys? Does ESPN, Sky Sports or BBC Sports use ‘Exclusive’ on normal views expressed by Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Rooney etc?

Please go and find out why ‘Exclusive’ are used in headline news. It means a juicy, breaking news item that dramatically jolts the public and changes the current narrative on a matter of wide public interest. For example:

‘Exclusive: ‘How Keshi stopped me, Obiku from ’94 squad’ – Akpoborie’

‘Exclusive: FIFA bans Siasia, says Nigeria bribed its way to 2018 Olympics U23 qualification under him.’

‘Exclusive: Rohr frustrated with Covid rule, say Nigeria may struggle against Cape Verde.’

BUT IF AKWA-IBOM CAN BUILD NEW STADIUM, TO ME IT IS A BIG SHAME THAT LAGOS STATE CANNOT BUILD BUILD NEW ULTRA MODERN STADIUM AROUND ATLANTIC OCEAN CITY WHERE FANS CAN EASILY BOARD FERRY BOAT TO THE VENUE (which can reduce much traffic on the road), UPON THE MUCH MONEY THEY REALIZED FROM LAND-USE-CHARGES, TOLL-GATE, TAXES, STREETS, LOCAL GOVTS.
LAGOS IS THE MOST POPULAR CITY/STATE WELL RECOGNIZE BY THE WORLD. T.BALOGLUN STADIUM IS BELOW SENIOR INC. STANDARD. IT CANNOT EVEN BE ACCEPTED BY CAF TO HOST SENIOR NATION CUP.
The city of Surulere looks like ancient city of my village.
NIGERIA, LAGOS, NFF OR PRIVATE SECTORS: PLEASE LET BUILD NEW STADIUM AROUND EKO ATLANTIC OCEAN CITY,
ORDINARY GHANA, EQ.GUINEA CAN BOAST OF FIVE NEW STADIA THAT CAN HOST SENIOR FIFA WORLD CUP.
    INFANT I DEY SHAME !!!.

  • Cape Verde can not stand SE interms of football…..our players are more high profile and experienced than theirs….If they don’t park the bus against SE or if they try to attack SE carelessly they will get the beating of their lifes…..

    • KangA 3 years ago

They’ll pack the bus and try swift counters. And that will be a deadly strategy!

“…Cape Verde can not stand SE in terms of football…”

But they played 0-0 with your 2013 AFCON winning side and knocked your CHAN team out of WAFU cup.

      Nigerians and their peculiar arrogance.

    • They defeated Cameron 2-0 in nations cup qualifiers and super eagles will with their team b.

      So anything can happen

  • Will any ex-internationals ever address the Nff over debts (IGBESE) bad pitches, training facilities etc? I’m tired o, they will always find players and Coach’s faults ni shaaa. Nff nearly crucified Balogun and axe him from the team for speaking his mind. Imagine o. Thank GOD for Mr Rohr and other players who countered them. When will they get it right bayii. O su mi o

Super Eagles till now are lacking a pressing style verusus any comptiter or rival,so I think Rhor must put in his mine and his heart to give instructions to the player they must play pressing and combative football versus Cape Verde becuase they are a strong rival, they many players play in portugal and thier coach is a vetern portugalese one;so SE must perferom a tiki taka style in order to defeat a dangerous rival in his group.
