Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Alloy Agu has exclusively told Completesports.com that the tooth injury he suffered during Nigeria’s 1990 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ghana in Kumasi remains one of the biggest sacrifices he made for his country, insisting the painful incident ultimately became part of the team’s journey to the AFCON final in Algeria.
Agu Reflects On Painful Kumasi Battle Against Ghana
Alloy Agu, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper, has exclusively told Completesports.com that losing a tooth in Nigeria’s 1990 AFCON qualifier away to Ghana’s Black Stars on September 2, 1990, was a divine sacrifice for the country.
Ohene Nana’s goal condemned the Super Eagles to a 1-0 defeat inside the Kumasi Stadium. But despite the loss, Clemens Westerhof’s side progressed to the Algeria ’90 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

The Super Eagles lost 5-1 to hosts Algeria in their opening group match but still fought their way to the tournament final, where they again lost narrowly, 1-0, to the North Africans to finish as runners-up.
Thirty-six years later, Agu reflected on the fierce encounter against Nigeria’s perennial West African rivals, describing the injury as a worthy sacrifice for the nation.
“That’s quite a long time ago. Thirty-six years is really a long time, but we give God the glory that I’m still alive today to talk about it,” Agu recalled during an exclusive interview with Completesports.com on Wednesday evening.
“I was happy we still qualified for the tournament proper and reached the final despite losing our opening game against the host nation, Algeria, whom we also met again in the final and lost by a narrow margin.

“Clemens Westerhof was in charge then and that tournament prepared us for the next AFCON in Senegal. We simply built on the 1990 experience.
“After the 1990 AFCON, I returned to Holland with MVV Maastricht and received proper treatment for the tooth injury.”
Four-Nation Unity Cup Will Help Super Eagles – Agu
The 59-year-old also shared his thoughts on the forthcoming Four-Nation Unity Cup involving Nigeria, Jamaica, Zimbabwe and India, scheduled to hold at Charlton Athletic’s The Valley Stadium in London from May 26 to 30, 2026.
“Nigeria has always been a strong football nation both within and outside Africa. It is a respected name in world football and I think this tournament will serve as good preparation for the next AFCON qualifiers.
“We have the players. We just need to be more organised in terms of preparation and, with that done, I have no doubts the Super Eagles will always deliver,” Agu stated.
Asked to choose between Daniel Amokachi and Samson Siasia for the vacant Nigeria U23 coaching role, Agu said both men possess the experience and pedigree needed for the job.
“For me, either Daniel Amokachi or Samson Siasia is good enough for the job.

“I have worked with Amokachi and I have also worked with Siasia. They are experienced and have pedigree. What I think should be done is for whoever the NFF prefers among them to be appointed on time.
“The U23 Eagles are like a semi-Super Eagles team because players graduate from there into the senior national side. That shows the importance of the role.”
Agu further stressed the need for the Nigeria Football Federation to handle the appointment carefully, considering the importance of the team to the future development of the senior national side.
Chelle’s NPFL Visit Mirrors Westerhof Era
Super Eagles head coach Éric Sékou Chelle was at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, on Sunday to watch the 2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 37 clash between Rangers and Bendel Insurance, which the Flying Antelopes won 2-1.
Chelle attended the game to monitor home-based players and Agu commended the Malian tactician for the gesture.
“That was what Clemens Westerhof used to do during his time with the Super Eagles. By doing that, players in the domestic league were given opportunities in the national team.
“That was how their development and exposure started, so much so that some eventually moved to Europe.

“I think Coach Chelle’s presence at the stadium was a major encouragement to the players because seeing the senior national team coach watching them could motivate them to earn invitations to the Super Eagles camp.

“Do not forget there is also the CHAN tournament coming up.”
NPFL Title Race Shows League’s Growing Competitiveness — Agu
Agu also spoke about the 2025/2026 NPFL title race and applauded the league organisers for maintaining a competitive campaign that will conclude before most top European leagues.
“First, I must say the fact that there is no certain winner of the NPFL until the final day of the season is a good advertisement for the league.
“It shows how competitive the season has been. It also means that a deserving winner will emerge and, when that happens, the country will present quality representatives in the 2026/2027 CAF inter-club competitions.
“Of course, we give glory to God for the success of the season. We must also commend the organisers for doing a good job. It has not always been like this in the past and we only hope things continue to improve in the coming seasons.”
