FIFA Imposes Sanction On Nigeria Over MKO Abiola Stadium Invasion

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee on Monday imposed sanctions on Nigeria for the misconduct of its fans during the world cup qualifying tie in Abuja on May 29.

Recall that displeased football fans had vandalised facilities at the MKO Abiola National Stadium following Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with the Black Stars of Ghana.

The tie had ended Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the global football tournament scheduled to start in November 2022 in Qatar.

The world football ruling body in a statement on its official website detailed the reason for these sanctions as “order and security at matches (failure to implement existing safety rules and failure to ensure that law and order are maintained in the stadium, invasion of the field of play and throwing of objects”.

“In line with FIFA’s zero-tolerance stance against discrimination and violence in football, a number of member associations have been punished due to the abusive behaviour by their respective supporters,” the communique also read.

It also imposed a 150,000 Swiss Franc (N63,996,216.90) fine on Nigeria as a result of the unruly behaviour of its fans, and one match without spectators.

Last month, the Senate invited the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare; NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, and other agencies involved in the maintenance of the MKO Abiola Stadium to determine the extent of the damage to facilities at the national arena.

The lawmakers had also instructed the Senate Committee on Sports and Youth Development to investigate the remote and immediate causes of Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the World Cup in spite of the huge fund by the government, individuals, and corporate bodies.

Anybody watching SE under Amaju get mind..so this ban no go touch us

  • Kekekekkek I laugh in awori,

The Yeye people complain that Rohr is collecting yo much salary they moved him out.

Lost money they would earn for qualifying for world cup, plus N65m gbese they will pay fifa.

Between Rohr and NFF tani aye nse bayi.

  • About 64 million naira that is adding salt to injury. They said Senegal was given the same fine but they qualified and it is easy to remove the money from the FiFA Lagsee but in our own case hmmmm. See what our football is going through in the hands of self acclaimed Baba alawo called Pinnnic and Mr queen English minister.

The criminals in the glass house will probably claim they are cash strapped and will say they can’t afford a foreign coach for the next few months or so…..
And then Salisu would hand the friendlies and the nations cup qualifiers. Might be a sleek way to say well they did damage at the stadium deal with it lol….

    • Golden Child 2 years ago

Own goal has already reported that Musa and Ighalo are in Salisu’s plans so expect same . We just never learn , is there anything new these two will bring to the eagles? Why not use the opportunity of having a friendly to look at new players that could potentially strengthen the team. I believe these lot are just evil because once this opportunity of having friendlies has passed, the excuse would be that they can not try new players in a qualifier and we end up with the same set of players that have let us down repeatedly . I give up!!

      • Footballfanatic 2 years ago

Wow this is just ridiculous…..A friendly that should be used to test as much new players as possible…..I will think Ighalo and musa will respect themselves and ask to be omitted..If they don’t let Nigerian soccer fans be the judge for me it’s time they give space.

You shouldn’t expect anything different. Salisu has always being part of the old order. The chances are there for him to bring back those players we’ve always condemned. They don’t care about us,or or our feelings. They are always right even with the series of failures starring us on the face . Nigerian football is definitely heading for the doom. Mark my words, if this Salisu manages to win the first match in AFcON qualifying series, they will tell him to handle the remaining matches and possibly leave him until another shameful disaster strikes. The FG isn’t making these people pay for their sins. They act with impunity and feel they can do anything and get away with it. FG should ensure no member of the current board returns. A better, more qualified Nigerian should also be sent to FIFA. He seems more concerned about maintaining his FIFA status than giving Nigeria a better global image than we currently have.

      • Not at all, with Amoo coming from the midfield supporting Lookman playing along side Odion a with other regulars in place, coach Yusuf side should be firing from all fronts. Orion and Musa are still very relevant.

The Minister of Sports and NFF Chairman have not told Nigerians what happened on that day at the MKO Abiola Stadium, how much destruction took place, and where they will find the funds to pay for the destruction and the FIFA penalty.

  • Hmmm.. Victor Moses that happens to be the best among the 3 refused when he was called back but these two annoying players keep forcing themselves on the national team. If they really wanna serve their father land and football fans, they should stay off the national team now!
*Zaidu/Bassey and Collins successfully stepped in for Echiejile
*Ndidi, Onyeka stepped in for Onazi, Joel
    * Aribo for Mikel, Ogu
    * Lookmon, Simon, for Victor Moses
    * Osimhen and other forwards had successfully erased this Ighalo’s performances off our momories but he’s so shameless. Even Musa, a captain that goes to camp Everytime just to go and cheer others ..those two has really served us but they are like their mentors (94 Squad) that are using old/past glories to scatter present state. Na God go pursue all of una by himself..Indi-ara!

    • Them Bassey you mentioned have not shown they have what it takes to win matches on the SE colors. Truth be told, Odion and Musa’s experience would come to play. The coach would need a blend of youthful players and experience.

      • That’s a fact. Had the coach played Odion and Amoo for only 30mins in the playoffs, the result would have been different. Bassey Dennis and Bonke were wasteful. Yusuf shouldn’t consider them in this new setup.

Does the FIFA ban state that the Sierra Leone game must be played at the MOO Abiola Stadium?

Hahahahaha… We sacked rohr to avoid an impending disaster. So they said to execute their plans. Fast forward to afcon, they crashed out in the round of sixteen. As if that was not enough, they failed to qualify for the world cup, losing the foreign exchange they could have earned in the process and then not forgetttin the invasion and destrction of facilities in the stadium by distraught heart broken fans who couldn’t understand why they crashed out having gotten used to qualifying for tournies with ease. And then, the legal suit of the NFF by rohr at Fifa of which a good chunk of dollars would be paid in full with abeg and thank you. Not forgetting the current dilemma Of getting a good quality coach with its attendant costs. Hahaa..if this is not a disaster they tried to avoid, then I don’t know what else it is. In fact, this is more serious than a disaster. Greedy stupid people. They sacked rohr ( whom they saw as a clog in their evil wheel.) Hoping that they could qualify for the world cup with any sort of coach so that they can conveniently share the world qualifying lagesse and others but karma had a different plan and struck without looking back. Hahahaha…useless bunch of greedy idiots!! The next time you’ll think of fighting a man whose hands are clean, una go think twice and do the right thing. Ndi ara. Instead of chopping as planned, you are now going to spend without any hopes of returns Hahahhhaha. Chei!! Mr ode and co, come and enjoy the delicious meal you cooked. Food is ready. After eating this one, una go purge without control . useless people.

How could the Ministry of Sports and the NFF overload the stadium with hooligans for such a sensitive match? I wrote in this tabloid BEFORE the game that it was risky to “throw the gates open” and that there could be trouble if Nigeria lost.Nobody listened and the rest is now history!

  • Ako AMADI 2 years ago

There could have been a conspiracy by the NFF and the Sports Ministry to sabotage Nigeria’s World Cup Qualification for financial and political reasons. This can only be the reason why the results of a probe and forensic audit into Nigeria’s failure at AFCON and the collapse agsinst a weak Ghsnsian side at Kumasi and Abuja are still pending.

    • Fetch 2 years ago

Well, that’s the uniqueness of the Black Stars, no matter how weak you may think they are, dem go always whip Nigeria
