Finidi Not Willing To Pick New Super Eagles Captain

Super Eagles head coach Finidi George claimed he won’t be involved in the process of picking a new captain for the team.

Current captain of the team Ahmed Musa is presently inactive and is expected to be omitted for the squad to face South Africa and Benin Republic in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

PAOK Salonica of Greece defender William Troost-Ekong has been the Super Eagles stand-in captain in Musa’s absence.

Finidi said it is the responsibility of his players to choose, who will lead them.

“It’s not my responsibility (to pick a captain), it’s the responsibility of the team,” he said during his media tour.

“People said (Sunday) Oliseh picked his captain and Finidi George should do same

It’s not my responsibility to pick a captain.

“The players will choose the person they are comfortable with.

“They will be them to decide who wears the captain’s arm band.”

Better just leave the team the way it is. If Troost Ekong has been the vice captain of the team, as well as the on-field captain all this while, and there has been unity in the team, better let it remain that way. I wonder why anymore should even raise the issue of selecting a new captain now. We Nigerians like unnecessary distractions too much. Oliseh did it and we all saw the disaster that came with it. There are more pressing issues to be addressed in that team right now. Selecting a new captain is certainly not one of them. We should rather be talking about who should be the vice captain of the team.

WHAT NIGERIA WANT MOST IS THAT ” A CAPTAIN OF SUPER EAGLE TEAM MUST BE THE ONE THAT WILL BE 100% RELEVANT ON THE FIELD OF PLAY ‘ NOT BENCH OR NOT ON SUBSTITUTE BENCH..
BY NOW AHMED MUSA SUPPOSE TO HAVE HANG HIS BOOTS. HE IS NOT RELEVANT IN ALL WAYS. IN AFCON, HE WAS USELESS AS A CAPTAIN, USELESS ON THE THE BENCH AND WASTED A SLOT THAT SUPPOSE TO BELONG TO OTHER PLAYERS.
** IN USA “94 , ROGER MILLA WAS NOT A USELESS CAPTAIN. HE ENTERED THE FIELD FROM BENCH AND SCORE THE ONLY GOAL AGAINST RUSSIA.
** IN AFCON 2000, OLISEH WAS NOT A USELESS CAPTAIN. HE ENTERED THE FIELD FROM BENCH ( despite he was undergoing malaria sickness) AND SUPPLIED A LONG DANGEROUS PÁSS TO J AGHAHOWA WHICH EVENTUALLY LEAD TO EQUALIZING GOAL (1-1) AGAINST SENEGAL.
It seem that FINIDI is not fully prepared for this super eagle job. No wonder some players attacked him and some snubbed his hand sake after MALI friendly. HE IS NOT VIBRANT TYPE OF COACH AND NOT HAVING CHARISMATIC for fans to follow his philosophy base the way he used to talk.
NIGERIA NEED ACTION COACH in terms of talking ( not to play football alone on the field)

      • Same way you all detest Peseiro until the semi final of AFCON, finidi is the head coach and he need our full support right now, charisma or not, individual has different ways of relaying messages to there players.

  • I tell you the Nigerian Media made up of Cluess individuals who don’t even Follow ball are just as much to blame as NFF for Sabotaging Super Eagles Focus and Readiness on the eve to crucial games. They raise the wrong issues and focus on mediocre players omissions and always seem to Give Ex Internationals And NPFL coaches too much voice when Super Eagles is about to play.

Very soon you will advocate for Musa to be at home while captaining the team.

Is it not someone that handed over to him?
    Did anybody die?
Did the world come to an end?

Inactive, uninvited captain is as well as no more a captain.

That man can bounce back again live with it.

Let a new leader be chosen by the players themselves whom they are comfortable

Hehehehe….Finidi, you dont need to pick a new captain, some people here already said “…Ndidi is the substantive captain of the SE. Ekong was only standing-in for him at the AFCON..”….LMAOoo

  • When People see fhat Ndidi is the new Captain dem go drink Rat poison mix with Pammi lol.

    • Dr. Drey 3 weeks ago

Hahahaha….I suppose that was what you drank when you came up with that big fat lie of yours…..LMAOoo….because it was evident your senses were on vacation at the time.

Shebi an you coronate Ndidi as new captain of the team….LMAOoo

Musa – Ekong – Omeruo – Simon – Ndidi……This is the current leadership order in the team now. Wait till the 4 ahead of him are no longer SE players before you go running your wide mouth in public to decalre Ndidi as the substantive captain of the Super Eagles

Shame indeed has no shame. You cannot shame the shameless….!!!

  • I feel really bad to be saying this but Finidi should please endeavour to hone his communication skills with fans.

I tried to watch an interview conducted with him by a radio station on YouTube but I had to give up midway.

If Finidi cannot convey his methods to fans, I pray he will be able to instil his approach to the players.

One can in retrospect mock Austin Eguavoen but his table soccer presentation on his tactical philosophy, methods, approach and techniques were as compelling as they were crystal clear, making me buy into them and at least know what to expect of his 2022 4-4-2 orientation.

Finidi was asked about his philosophy, a question that peaked my interest, but Finidi appeared to skirt around the question rather than tell us what his Super Eagles Outfit was all about. In fairness to Finidi I thought the Panel were nebulous in their questions.

He was asked about the ‘style’ he wants to inculcate into the team, a truly fascinating question and one that should provide opportunity for Finidi to shine. He looked rattled, and visibly unsure of what to say.

He came across to me as a salesman who lacks conviction in what he is selling.

    I am not sold, really.

But it might just be that Finidi is not cut out for media grilling. To be fair to him he did convey his ideas effectively enough for Eyimba players to attain league success. I hope and pray he does the same for the Super Eagles.

This write is about who wears SE captain band. Finidi is already the national team coach. For me, Ekong, Osime, Omerua or Ndidi should deputize

Focussing on the task ahead is really the way to go though the issues around Super Eagles captainship is part of that preparation. However, the question is what is the criterion for choosing a captain for the Eagles? Oliseh said he chose Musa because of his dedication to the team and there was no argument about Musa’s dedication to the team as at then. Until recently, who among the players is really dedicated? I would give it to all of them with the exception of Sadiq. Now, critically laying the issue to rest and conceeding the fact that they are almost all dedicated to national call, I would rather the oldest player among them is chosen to forestall inherent rancour in the fold.
