Former Star Backs Captaincy Call

Ex-Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar says the club is correct to take the captaincy off Mauro Icardi in favour of Samir Handanovic.

Striker Icardi did hold the armband but protracted contract negotiations between his agent, Wanda Nara, who is also his wife, and the club have turned sour, with talks repeatedly breaking down.

The 26-year-old Argentine has scored 15 goals in 28 appearances for Nerazzurri so far this season but the club have still decided to take the armband off him and award it to Handanovic, who has been with the club since 2012.

Cesar, who played for Inter for seven years between 2005 and 2012, says the club is right to give the captaincy to Handanovic, citing the player’s professionalism as the reason.

“Personally I have never played as captain, but the position of the captain is always very special,” he told Tencent Sports.

“Samir Handanovic had the opportunity to serve Inter as a captain, in this position you can control the whole situation and see if there is anything that can affect the field. “He is a very strong and important element for the team.”
