Gross Happy To Do His Bit

Pascal Gross insists he is happy to do whatever it takes to help Brighton achieve their aims this season. The 28-year-old, in his third season at the Amex Stadium, is primarily a midfielder and was deployed in that position during 165 games with previous club FC Ingolstadt 04.

The former Germany Under-19 star has played in all four of the Seagulls Premier League matches this season, starting two, but boss Graham Potter has switched him around.

Gross began the campaign on the right-hand side of Albion’s front three as Brighton pulled off a 3-0 opening weekend victory over Watford at Vicarage Road but returned to the centre of the park in the 2-0 home loss to Southampton and the 2-1 Carabao Cup triumph over Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

The former Hoffenheim man has been used from the bench in the past two games but despite a lack of continuity, Gross is unconcerned and content to muck in for the good of the team. “I can play in different positions, so it doesn’t really matter what shape we’re playing,” he said.

“Whether it’s number eight, number ten, on the left or on the right, I’m happy to play there. “Because we have a back five with high full-backs, it’s not the typical role of a winger. I can get in the pockets of space where I feel comfortable and use my strengths.”

Next up for the south-coast outfit is the visit of Burnley on Saturday as domestic action resumes following the international break and Potter will be targeting a second league win of the campaign.

The Clarets also began well with a 3-0 victory over Southampton at Turf Moor but that remains their only success, with a 3-0 defeat to European Champions Liverpool on their own patch prior to the break seeing them 12th but on the same number of points as Brighton.
