Hudson-Odoi Offered Counselling By Chelsea

Chelsea will offer Callum Hudson-Odoi counselling if he wants it after facing two incidents of racist abuse playing for club and country.

Hudson-Odoi was among the England players, also including Raheem Sterling and Danny Rose, who were subject to racist chanting during the 5-1 Euro 2020 qualifying victory over Montenegro on Monday night.

Last week, Chelsea lodged a formal complaint with UEFA over racist abuse aimed at 18-year-old Hudson-Odoi during the closing stages of the 5-0 Europa League win away to Dynamo Kiev on March 14.

Chelsea hold the highest regard for player welfare, and Press Association Sport understands Hudson-Odoi is to be offered a wide range of options for additional support if he feels it is wanted.

Hudson-Odoi made his first senior start for England in Podgorica, where he helped set up a goal for Ross Barkley during an impresive victory for the Three Lions.

Speaking after the match, the Chelsea player had tackled the issues head on during his media interviews and hoped “UEFA deal with it properly”. Following the incident in the Europa League tie, both the club and player were content the matter was being handled correctly and taken very seriously by UEFA having gone through the proper channels.

On Tuesday, the governing body confirmed an ethics and disciplinary inspector had been appointed to “evaluate” Chelsea’s complaint ahead of deciding whether to open disciplinary proceedings.

Chelsea return to action following the international break with a trip to Premier League relegation battlers Cardiff on Sunday, when Hudson-Odoi will be hoping to be given another chance to impress by Blues boss Maurizio Sarri.
