Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has reassured Christian Pulisic he will still be given adequate game time after leaving him out against Liverpool. The USA international was hoping to play some part in Sunday’s 1-2 defeat to Liverpool, but he was an unused substitute at Stamford Bridge.
Pulisic watched from the stands as Liverpool extended their winning record thanks to goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino. Chelsea did manage to find a way back into the game after a strike from N’Golo Kante, but it was not enough in the end.
Pulisic signed for the Blues for £58million in January, before being allowed to stay with Borussia Dortmund until the end of the Bundesliga campaign.
He has made four appearances in the league so far, but unlike Mason Mount, he has failed to score.
Mount proved his fitness to start against the Reds, while Pulisic was also dropped for the midweek Champions League defeat to Valencia.
Lampard says the 21-year-old is still a massive part of his plans and he has urged him to be patient at present.
He told reporters: “He wasn’t a victim of the injuries. I’ve got a good squad to pick from. Before that, he had played a few games. Willian has come back in and been sharp and looked good.
“I decided to go with Mason today because we needed to stay strong in midfield and play Mason high up the pitch. That is my choice to make. He will get ample opportunities. “His chances will come.”
Chelsea are now without a win in two matches and they sit 11th in the Premier League table after the first six games of the 2019/20 campaign.
Pulisic could be given another chance during Wednesday’s Carabao Cup meeting with Grimsby Town. The Blues will host the League Two outfit before then welcoming Brighton on Saturday.
As well as Pulisic, Willy Caballero, Reece James, Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi will be hoping to feature.
