Josh Maja hopes to improve his game and feature more regularly for French Ligue club Girondis Bordeaux

The Nigeria international scored six goals in 21 league appearances for Bordeaux last season.

Maja, started six games and was a substitute 15 times.

“I would like to be able to improve my level of play and be able to score. For the team, we have the objective of reaching the top 6, I think we can be able to reach it if we give the best.

“We must continue to work hard and I hope that we will have the chance to achieve this goal ”.

Maja joined Bordeaux from Sunderland in January 2019 on a four-and-a-half-year contract.

  • _ Maja’s March to Greatness _

As cool as an assassin with the ruthlessness of a hanging judge in and around the 18 yard, I think the key starting place to improve for Josh Maja is on the training ground.

Because last season, the former Sunderland sharpshooter proved how proficient he can be when given the opportunity to display his football wares. Having checked tranfermkt.com, I realised that out of 7 games where Josh Maja played 45 plus minutes, he contributed to 8 finishes, registered 6 goals and providing 2 assists in the process underlying the devastation this weapon of mass casualties can inflict if afforded more healthier game time.

For me, it then begs the question why in 54% of games (14 out of 26) in the 19/20 season, the Super Eagles striker has been played for less than 45 minutes each? In fact in 9 games, he has played roughly less than 15 minutes each. In those games, he was less productive and understandably so.

According to one Source when Maja was in Sunderland, his work rate was sighted as one of his areas for improvement. Perhaps this has been noted in training sessions in Bordeaux which would make any coach reluctant to replace the club’s de facto striker with a player not guaranteed to go the distance concentration-wise.

“Personally, I will hope to start more matches ; I will like to improve my level of play.” Said Maja according to the article above.

For me, these are key and crucial for if Maja can be seen to improve his level of play in trainings thereby earning him more healthier berths to replicate his output of last season across many more matches, then the world of football will take renewed notice and his place in the wider Super Eagles squad will be all but guaranteed.
