Martinez Relives Belgium’s Famous Win Against Brazil At 2018 World Cup

Ahead of Belgium’s 2022 World Cup campaign, coach Roberto Martinez has been recalling with nostalgia, the Red Devis’ famous win against A Selecao (the national team) of Brazil at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Belgium defeated Brazil 2-1 in the quarter-final stage of the Russia 2018 World Cup on July 6.

In a chat with Aljazeera, Martinez relived the famous victory over the Selecao at the previous World Cup.

“In the World Cup you have a tournament within a tournament – the knockout phase and the group phase,” Martinez said.

“Playing a knockout game against Brazil is quite unique. For everyone in Belgium, not just to play Brazil but to beat them is always a game that we are going to remember and treasure.”

Belgium are in Group F of the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Canada, Croatia and Morocco.

The Red Devils have qualified for the FIFA World Cup 14 times (1930, 1934, 1938, 1954, 1970, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2014, 2018 and 2022).

Belgium’s FIFA World Cup best performance was recorded at the Russia 2018 edition where they finished third best following a 2-0 win over England in the Third-Place Match at the Krestovsky Stadium on July 14.
