Morocco Sacks Head Coach Halilhodzic Three Months Before 2022 World Cup

Morocco Football Federation (FRMF) has sacked national team coach Vahid Halilhodzic just three months before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, BBC Sport reports.

The FRMF said the decision was taken because of disagreements on how to prepare the Atlas Lions for the finals.

A statement from the football body read:“The two parties have agreed to part ways amicably.”

Halilhodzic took charge of the North Africans in August 2019 and led the side to the quarter-finals of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

He then secured World Cup qualification in March following a 5-2 aggregate win over DR Congo.

The 69-year-old Bosnian’s departure could see the return of Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech to the Morocco squad, following a highly publicised spat involving the pair.

Ziyech, 29, quit international football in February and then turned down a call-up for March’s World Cup play-off against DR Congo – but FMRF president Fouzi Lekjaa subsequently said the door was open for Ziyech to return.

Speculations about the future of the Halilhodzic had been rife in the local media after Lekjaa announced that Ziyech would be a part of the World Cup squad.

Morocco will face 2018 runners-up Croatia, Belgium and Canada in Group F at the World Cup finals in Qatar.

Halilhodzic’s departure from the Morocco job marks the third time he has been fired by a country he helped qualify for the World Cup.

Côte d’Ivoire and Japan both qualified for the 2010 and 2018 World Cups respectively under his charge – but he lost both jobs before the respective tournaments took place.

His dismissal by the Ivorians came after the Elephants fared poorly at the Nations Cup some six months before the 2010 World Cup, and he was replaced by Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The Japanese Football Association, meanwhile, cited “communication” problems and claimed Halilhodzic had lost the trust of his players when he was sacked two months before the 2018 tournament.

Former Nantes, Lille and Paris St-Germain manager Halilhodzic coached Algeria to the last 16 at the 2014 tournament in Brazil, where the North Africans lost 2-1 after extra time to eventual champions Germany.

The 1976 AFCON winners will now seek to appoint a successor, with former international Walid Regragui, who led Wydad Casablanca to the African Champions League crown in May, among the candidates for the job.

They’ll pay for their stupidity, these administrators who DO NOT understand football, similar to the 98 and 02 world cups for Nigeria, whatever the reason you don’t sack a coach months before a world cup.

And mr former assistant coach by virtue of caps earned and loyalty is still busy frying his hair with relaxer, looking for the latest expensive suit to buy instead of looking for ways to develop himself coaching wise. Majority of our ex internationals are just so lazy …..

Bcs u wanted a player back, you had to axe ur coach to make way for one single player????? That’s really incredible and absurd. Just wait and see what will happen to you at the mundial. In fact, it will take a miracle for you people to recover from the consequences of your ill thought decision within the shortest period of time
Ask Nigeria how far and they will tell u how far and how good. U think say football na mathematics. That player u sacrificed ur coach for would never respect anyone in the team and this would become a huge problem for the team and football Association of morocco in the long run. Africans never learn..
