The Port Harcourt club maintained their unbeaten start to the new campaign courtesy of a 2-1 win over the Promise Keepers.

Ndifreke Effiong however popped in with the winning goal for Rivers United five minutes from time.

Despite his side’s victory Finidi praised their opponent for putting up a strong fight.

“It was a difficult three points. Akwa came in here to fight and see how they could get a draw, so we must commend them for putting in that effort. It’s not easy, but at the end of the day, we got those three points,” Finidi told the club’s media.

Rivers United moved to the summit following the win.

The former Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions will face Katsina United away in their next league game.
