The 38-year-old defender, who recently joined River Plate, confirmed his decision in a video shared on Instagram.

“I dreamed from a very young age of wearing the Argentina shirt. It was the greatest privilege football gave me,” Otamendi said (via beIN Sports).

In his farewell message, Otamendi spoke about the loss to Spain, which became the final match of his international career.

“Fate wanted my last match to be a World Cup Final. It wasn’t the result we wanted, but I leave with my head held high because this group fought until the very last second. I leave knowing I gave everything,” he said.

The veteran center-back also thanked Argentina’s supporters for their unconditional support throughout his journey.
