Peseiro Can Lead Super Eagles To AFCON Glory — Udi

Peseiro Can Lead Super Eagles To AFCON Glory — Udi

Former Super Eagles midfielder Duke Udi has said it would be unfair to sack the team’s head coach Jose Peseiro.

Udi also backed the Portuguese to lead the Super Eagles to a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title in Cote d’Ivoire next year.

Peseiro was widely criticised following the Super Eagles stuttering start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The West Africans earned just two points from their opening two games against the Likuena of Lesotho and Warriors of Zimbabwe.

Udi however believed that the Super Eagles can win the title in Cote d’Ivoire and also secure a place at the 2026 World Cup finals.

“It’s too early to sack a coach because he drew two matches. He has not lost,” Udi told BBC Sports Africa.

“We are still on course for both competitions (the World Cup and Nations Cup). In Ivory Coast, anything can happen.”

Cote d’Ivoire will host the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations from January 13 to February 11, 2024.

The Super Eagles are in Group A with Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.

They will open their campaign against Equatorial Guinea at the Alssanne Quattara Stadium, Ebimpe on January 14.

Peseiro must bring back Musa, Ebuehi, Success,Trroost-Ekong Okoye, Akpoguma and Balogun to fight for selection

    • @Ako Amadi Musa for what?.. The other players you mentioned are still very active Musa is useless, Moreover the only player we need who can motivate the younger ones in attack, and lead from the field I keep telling you people is VICTOR MOSES but you people fail to yeild good advise. Who was more decisive in thier days in SE Musa or Victor Moses??????

    • I agree, our current CB pair in particular (asides the goalkeeper) is leaking. Let him invite all the old dependables from 2021 up for the Afcon camping this December and select only the best of the best for the tournament.

Everyone should fight for their spot, even if Paseiro no longer invites a new face. No one should think he has a guaranteed shirt. If you’re good you won’t be afraid of competition from any old and experienced reliable.

Youth + experience always. Never sacrifice one for the other. Find the perfect balance. We are currently suffering from an overdose of talent but a lack of experience in front of goals and the backline.

    • Of all the players you mention, I agree with you on ekong, the back line need his leadership, bassey and Ajayi combo is not working, pair Ajayi with omeruo or ekong, ekong is a leader, we saw how he handle the penalty in such a high tempo match vs Ghana , he is also a threat  in the opponent half, he as well can play from back, bassey to me is below average.

Yes. Blending matters alot in building a team. One thing about young people is the false self belief that youths is ther time and can do it. So mouthy, but only when you give them, they show to be so floppy. Mixture is best

Awoniyi is said to be out of the AFCON with a groin injury that will keep him out for 3 to 4 months. Whoever the coach must call up Gift Orban or anyone that can stake a claim to be counted.

  • Udi who paid you to say this,a coach who have not improved our team in anyway drawing against lesetho and zimbabwe..we know say na money dem give u to say dis.

Peseiro does not listen to anyone or take advice. Look at his assistants, what impact is he allowing them to bring to the team. Finidi is a worldclass winger with accurate crosses. Do you see it in the team. All jokers.

Duke Udi are you sure you have been watching this team play under Peseiro or you are just talking so that your voice could be heard? Am really ashamed by your comments cos I believe that as a former Super Eagles player who met some good coaches you would not subscribe to the retention of Peseiro. He has no tactical or technical know how about the game. He is a scam introduced by the NFF to scam Nigerians and give them heart attack and heart break. What do you mean by he should not be sacked. The NFF should be sacked also. Unfortunately the NFF board was duly elected. Yes the man has not been paid 7 months salary, it is still not enough not to sack him. If he remains Nigerians will weep at AFCON.

  • With Peserio, winning the AFCON in January is not possible. What if Osimhen is unfit again? Any replacements? No.

Any creative spark in the midfield yet? No. Do you think he’ll blood new midfield dynamos before AFCON unless the current crop is missing out? No.

Are we guaranteed that all the clubs will release any of our players in time to “acclimatize” with Peserios non existent philosophy?

    Better put,

Attention turn to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which begins 13 days into the new year. Unless in leagues that take yuletide break, players will have no time to be mentally prepared before being thrust into the campaign proper.

Besides, the coach has been uninspiring. Since taking charge in 2022, Peseiro has won 6 and lost six of his 15 matches in the dugout.

His side have scored 31 times – with 10 coming in one game against Sao Tome e Principe, and 6 in the reverse fixture making it half of his coaching goals were only against 1 team – and conceded 21 goals.

Uzoho, his trusted keeper has conceded 7 goals in his last 7 matches. How can the coach dream of pulling any surprise then? Not a chance.

The best we can do is dream again for AFCON 2025 which hopefully would hold in the summer of 2025 so there is no time for second chances.

Eagles better shape in or ship out. Multiple qualification matches are coming up in 2024. Thankfully, afcon failure will sink Peserio quicker so maybe we might have sense to not have principalities in eagles squad again since world cup failure mentality is in the present team that takes passion for granted.

Many of the players in the current squad missed the last world cup and perhaps they lost nothing so they’re pulling the same cards again and they are even undroppable sef.

A bad tree will not produce good fruit.

  • Coach Peseiro will lead Super Eagles to win next world cup.
