Peseiro Hails Players Despite Defeat To Algeria; Speaks On Officiating, New Players, Targets

Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro says his players did their best despite the defeat to Algeria in Tuesday’s friendly encounter.

Peseiro’s charges started the game on a good note with Lorient striker Terem Moffi firing them into the lead in the ninth minute.

The Desert Foxes equalised from the penalty spot through Riyadh Mahrez three minutes before the break

Defender, Youcef Atal netted the winning goal from a long range effort 20 minutes from time.

“It was a good game, the camping showed the quality of our players and their collective effort. It was a hard match, Algeria is good team. Our players try to do what I ask them to do in training,”Peseiro told NFF TV.

“It is possible you lose in football, i’m sad we lost. I don’t like to lose any match but I am very happy with the performance of my players. They did well in the game.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t win the game, but I’m happy with the performance of my players.”

Godwin Saviour and Rapheal Onyedika made their first appearance for the Super Eagles in the game.

Saviour replaced the ineffective Ademola Lookman in the 65th minute, while Onyedika took the place of Frank Onyeka late on.

Peseiro shared his thoughts on the performance of the duo.

“Raphael and Godwin played for the first time with the national team. They did well,”he remarked.

“I called nine players I don’t really know before. Players who have not played with me before but some of them have played with the national team .

“Players we are just working with for the first time. Everybody played. Good job all around.”

The Super Eagles were denied a clear goal in the first half and many also questioned the penalty awarded to the Algerians.

Peseiro stated that the centre referee was wrong to disallow the goal.

“Everybody makes mistake. Myself and the players can make mistake. We scored a goal that was disallowed,”he argued.

“The penalty I could accept. He shoot the ball before Frank caught him. We must accept. There was no offside when we scored. It should have been 2-0 to us at that point.

“My team fought hard created opportunities. Draw would have been a fair result. Congratulations to Algeria.Fantastic atmosphere, good match.

It was a good experience for us. Algerians supported their team. It’s good for us to know where we are and move on from there.”

The former Venezuela and Saudi Arabia gaffer also reflected on his experience with the players in camp.

“I am happy with the camping what I can say is that is not easy to have good understanding, good organisation without training,”Peseiro stated.

“We spent eight days in camp everyone try to do the maximum. You try to input more dynamism, more organisation.

“It was another opportunity to know the players more , know the team generally and the new players. Create more understanding in the team, work more to building cohesion in our game.”

Peseiro also explained where his team need to improve in subsequent games.

“We didn’t do well in attack at times, i think we can do better in that phase. We can improve our game generally. We did well defensively but we can do more offensively. Control the ball more, show more character and fight real hard.

“We need to improve our organisation, put new dynamics. We need to work more . We have quality players but we need to.improve in the area of organization”

The 60-year-old also revealed his desire and targets for the future.

“I am more confident than before, we lost but I have more confident in this team,”Peseiro hinted.

The players must do well in their clubs, my staff see many matches every week.
They watch the players extensively. It’s not easy to he in the national team.

“You need quality, commitment and adapt well too. Sacrifice and have good commitment.

“I’m sad with the result but we did well. We want to win the next AFCON. First, we must qualify and play quality friendly matches and have more camping.

“We want to have a a solid team. We have a good team and we want to improve. Everybody must work together. Myself, my staff and the NFF . We can play at the highest level.”

  • That is exactly what I said on another thread exactly my point. Coach you try well. I believe against Portugal Hopefully a full strength squad we will do better.

And Coach my advise to you any player between Dennis, Ndidi and Osimhen who do not honour that call should be banned from Super Eagles cause for good. Whether they like it or not. Set boundries for these players.

I advice coach peseiro if you would like to creat incredible and formidable Super Eagles then would like to win Afcon. Cup of Nations in Cote De’Ivore, you must make strong overhaul on SE on set of players then put strong pattern of play which SE have been playing with it; on set of players you must exclude shaky and not interactive players like William Troost Ekong, Kelechi Iheanacho, Uzoho,Okoye, Balogun, Bonke,Semi Ajayi, all they are playing at weak clubs also thery are being put on benches on most of their clubs matches; recall strong , interactive players who are playing all time now at their clubs matches, like Victor Boniface,Moses Uzor, yira Sor, Alhassan Ibrahim, Anderson Esiti, Mark Ogboh Midtijylland goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo Arsenal goalkeeper, John Nobil Enyimba goalkeeper, Egoh Ugboh Lillestorm center back, Tyronne Ebuehi, Kingsley Ehisibue, Lesly Ugochukwu Rennes defensive midfielder, Udogie Udinese center back; on the pattern of play you must play organized strong offensive ferocious playing epecially on defensive midfield also you must fix and control rival’s shooting from distance which cost SE many defeats as Misekni shooting from distance on Tunisia match in last Afcon. in Cameroon, Partey shooting from distance on Ghana match which cost SE exclution from FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022, Atal shooting from distance on Algeria friendly yesterday in Oran stadium, the process of coverage players from distance needs from Peseiro to give SE defensive midfielders or all players that they must press the rival from midfield, give instructions to tow forwards to press rival midfielders , don’t give them acreages or areas to shoot or kick the ball , keeping the ball for a long time, press strongly on the rival; this process need an interactive and active players who are just like bees are running all over the jungle.

  • P.s. that green jersey is horrible Algeria’s simple design was much more beautiful. that jersey looks like the players were going for village meeting.

Several of us, days before the match, were telling this coach that his midfield cover was not adequate with only 4 midfielders selected for the squad and an injured Ndidi reducing it to 3.

The first half was a very good performance but as the match wore on – like Ghana did in WCQ – Algeria packed the midfield overwhelming Nigeria with numbers. Nigeria like against Ghana had no response because we lacked personnel. The second half was classic Eguavoen, with stifled wings and not enough thrust through the middle to relieve the wings.

Tactically, the coach lost this match a few days ago with his squad selection. Onyedika has promise but is not yet ripe and needs more international experience, especially against sides like Algeria that dive at the slightest touch. The difference in midfield between our last match and this one was Etebo. His skill and experience in midfield were missed.

Next time coach, don’t let your Nigerian assistants name the team, because they only have one tactic, wing play; choose 6 midfielders at least when you see your opponents overloading the midfield you can answer.

    • You’re right. Etebo. Even when he was half fit, he did better than all these onyeka. I think onyeka should go away from this team.

We are always struggling in midfield when etebo and ndidi are not playing..my prayers: etebo settle down and play regularly. We hope onyedika and alhassan can come good later. And this boy, Kingsley Michael. I am still waiting for him too.

    • Ololo 1 year ago

Great analysis! We miss Etebo and ndidi.. sadly we don’t have players with their qualities.. Etebo has covered adequately in the absence of Ndidi but Nigerians didn’t appreciate his efforts, onyeka and onyedika still need more Time as they made our midfield very porous yesterday..

Having only 3 midfielders in the squad is a selection error.. a very big one and the fact that the midfield was sacrificed for defenders like awaziem and valentine shows either the coach was sleeping when making his squad or someone in the class house made the list for him..

Pls pesiro at least 5 midfielders per squad.. if you can’t invite Etebo bring back aribo or nwakali they both have afcon experience or try a alhasan Yusuf…

I don’t expect much from the team against Portugal, if you can’t dominant Algeria is it Portugal they will win.. we are losing our team..so sad

      • Greenturf 1 year ago

It will be easier to play Portugal. We play better outside Africa.
Portugal are Europeans we play better against teams outside Africa,we are likely to lose but we shall give a good account of ourselves.
Last night we hadn’t three of our experienced midfielders,Aribo,Ndidi and Etebo. It will always be difficult against a determined Algerians at home.
We were outplayed we were thought soccer lessons by a well coached Pep Guardiola style Algerian team.

  • Why I like this coach more than rohr. He speaks confidence. He calls them who they are supposed to be. He looks forward to winning afcon. Nigeria no matter what should always look forward to win afcon. That’s what the players should hear. Not a coach who tell ls you that you will only bhet to the semi final before afcon.

I wonder why we should be scared in Africa. How many of these African teams are exceptional. Even Senegal. The team struggled at the early stages of afcon. So with more organization we can win afcon..

    Good talk coach.

  • We need more options in the midfield. 3 to 4 players are not enough especially when one is just joining the team and another hasn’t proven that he deserves a starting shirt. Bring in more midfielders, let’s start with 3 midfielders, you can still use 2 attackers and one winger with one of the attackers drifting to the wings or one of the full backs playing as a wing back. We played the same predictable style of football last night. Trying to attack from the wings which made it easy for the Algerians to defend and cut off our attacks. I am yet to see any improvement in our style of play. I appreciate the use of two attackers which I feel is an improvement but we don’t need two wingers which will cost us a man in midfield especially when our midfield is so weak. We should learn from the 2013 squad. 4-3-3. Mikel, onazi, and mba in midfield with Emenike, ideye and Victor Moses in attack that was all we needed to win the afcon. We can adopt this same style of play and be more effective in our games.

    Wonderful contribution sportfan..

Since pesiro loves the two striker role we can remove one striker and add a midfielders who can play as a winger at times.. the role mba played so well in 2013.. aribo is that player. Iwobi can also play that role with distinction..

I will love to see us play this way

    Aino akpugoma bassey sanusi

    Ndidi iwobi

    Aribo Simon

    Oshimen. Iheancho/moffi

    4/4/2

Our midfield is suffering so badly each time we play two wingers and two strikers. Pesero needs to watch clips of our matches in 2013 coached by the underrated late Stephen Keshi.. adding mba to his team was the magic he used to win that afcon Moses was playing as a winger/ attacking midfielders.. I think Simon can play the wing well and other players like aribo can compensate for the attacking midfield he might lack

      Remove a winger and add a midfielder#

We can sacrifice lookman and bring him in the second half , how Wing play approach is becoming too predicable

“….We introduced Bentaleb to help reorganize the midfield and deny Alex Iwobi time and space. We noticed he was having plenty of time on the ball to spray passes that Nigeria need in transition….”

    Jose Peserio
“…We lost because of the referee…”

Fellow Nigerians, We are seriously in trouble…LMAOOooo

    • Hi, our coach is saying that arrangement by Algeria wasn’t telling, that had the goal not been ruled out,it would have been different.
I wonder if to believe him.

Ok agreed,we may likely have won if the goal stood, but playing mostly on the counter because we don’t have the numbers in midfield to truly control the game. Is that really the Naija way of playing?

Or maybe I should believe that the Algerian project is older than ours(which is true), so for now this counter-attacking system is what suits us against them?

If your project is young, why not invite players thinking futuristically? Are there not Nigerian goalkeepers who are playing regularly in their clubs? Are there not other midfielders(not defensive ones) who can be invited, just incase you need to change plans? There are,so why not invite them na?

      Questions…

Also I recommend Peseiro to change his tactic to 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 in order to increase the midfield side which is weak side in Super Eagles team; you can play as follows: Aina,Bassey,Sanusi-Ndidi,Etebo,Alhassan,Iwobi,Simon-Osimhen, Moffi; or Aina,Akpoguma,Bassaey,Sanusi- Ndidi,Alhassan,Iwobi- Simon,Lookman,Osimhen. Give all players to return back to cover if the ball comes from rival back side, give all player to press the rival so strongly in order to limit his acreage his area.

    Few observations on SE Play:

    1) SE must practice more on how to use spaces very quickly to dominate and score goals (You saw the wayward passes from “Zaidu Sanusi” and lookman wasted time to pass the ball through spaces for his teammate…. Just play it at once); Iwobi is a master in exploiting spaces, others should learn from him. Also, we must learn how to close spaces fast to avoid our opponents exploiting us. We must improve on our 1,2 passes both in accuracy and timeliness.

    2. SE players (attackers, midfielders and strikers) should on their own develop their shooting skills and during SE training, the coach must subject the entire team (including the goal keepers) on a tedious shooting drills and stamina drills…. Think about Taiye Taiwo, Emmanuel Emenike, Sunday Olise, et al.
This shooting drills will equally subject the goal keepers on the fire test of shots and bullets…. Because your opponent will use it on you during match, so prepare ahead.

    3. Our wingers (Moses Simon and Lookman especially) appear to be very lazy on Pace and scoring from the flanks using shots and R2. They should harness the equal opportunities of pull outs/passes and scoring goals too.
There should be other better options for us on the flanks. Learn from Victor Moses, Mo Salah, Luiz Dias, … Even our full back like Zaidu needs to urgently improve on his passes and crosses else let Bassey go there.

    4. Uzoho is very good but need to work on stopping shots and …I will recommend the Coach to invite like six (6) goalkeepers next camp including Alampasu, Adeleye, Uzoho, …. (Okoye should be allowed to settle & develop with his club first). Cheers!!!

    ….

  • Poor officiating is never an offside the goal should have stood.

Again the penalty is an error given the ball was played before the contact was made

The Nigeria team needs a holding middle fielder.

The attacks look sharp and Good

    Keep working and keep improving

I agree with the coach, that disallowed goal changed everything. At 2-0, I don’t think Algeria would’ve come back to win. Also, the guy who caused that penalty was childish,he gave Algerians lifeline.
Can’t we find a better keeper from the domestic league or somewhere? All these Uzoho and Okoye, na basket dem be.
