Redknapp Highlights Reasons For Iwobi’s Earlier Struggles At Everton

Former England international, Jamie Redknapp, says that Alex Iwobi is a talented player who was negatively affected by lack of top spirit and poor results during the time of former Everton manager, Marco Silva, and interim coach, Duncan Ferguson, Completesports.com reports.

Iwobi arrived at the Merseyside club in July 2019 from Arsenal for €30.40million , and according to former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Redknapp, the winger only failed to spark for his new club from the onset because he met a side whose team spirit wasn’t right, and consequently, was not playing well.

Iwobi featured in 25 Premier League games for Everton last season and scored only one goal, and played 29 times in all competitions, scoring twice and bagging one assist.

In the current campaign, Iwobi has played three games in all competitions so far – two in the Premier League and one Carabao Cup game, as he fights to be become an important player in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

He was impressive in Everton’s 5-2 win against Fleetwood Town last week, in the Third Round on the Carabao Cup . He featured 90 minutes in the match. But Ancelotti handed him a four-minute cameo role in the Toffee’s last Premier League match, their 2-1 win at Crystal Palace.

Everton are now winning, maintaining 100 percent record in the Premier League with their two wins from two games so far. They have also reached the Fourth Round of the Carabao Cup – set to clash with West Ham on Wednesday. And Redknapp told Sky Sports, as quoted by Hitch.com, the reasons for Iwobi’s earlier struggles and believes he can now thrive better in the current good fortunes at the club.

“It hasn’t quite worked out for him, but it’s difficult when you come into a team when you’re not full of confidence and the team isn’t playing well, it makes it very hard,” Hitch.com quoted Redknapp, as a pundit, telling Sky Sports during Everton’s Carabao Cup match with Fleetwood Town.

“When you come in and they’re playing like this you want to be part of it. He’s obviously got talent but sometimes he comes into the team and everyone is lacking confidence and nobody really wants the ball, but right now everyone is buzzing.”

This man is a Phycologist, and I guess will help bring out the gold in Iwobi. Good analysis, I pray he continues in this newly found spirit and form.

  • I will go with the line of thought that Iwobi’s problem is psychological. For a talented player like Iwobi to be consistently inconsistent is really a cause for worry. He should be encouraged to see a psychologist so that whatever the underlying problem is that is bringing about his inconsistency is brought to the fore and thrashed. It will be really nice to see him replicate his SE performances in his club.
