IBF, WBO and WBA ‘super’ heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr would like his Anthony Joshua rematch to be in Mexico later this year. The pair clashed over the weekend in New York, with Ruiz Jr pulling off one of the biggest shocks in boxing history as he stopped Joshua in the seventh round.
Ruiz Jr was a huge underdog going into the bout but he proved his class, as he knocked down Joshua on four occasions. Matchroom Boxing chief Eddie Hearn confirmed he will push for a rematch in the UK but Ruiz Jr says he would like to fight in Mexico after becoming the country’s first heavyweight world champion.
“I’d love to do the rematch but first I’ve got to talk to my team, we’ll go from there and figure things out,” ‘The Destroyer’ told Sky Sports. “I’d love to be in Mexico, there’s never been a heavyweight champion in Mexico so I’d love to have a rematch there. “I’m still pinching myself that this is true, all that hard work and dedication, I’ve made my dreams come true. “We’ve been working for this my whole life, it’s overwhelming and I’m just excited.”
