Spanish Super Cup Final: Messi Sent Off As Athletic Bilbao Shock Barca In Five-Goal Thriller

An extra time wonder goal from Inaki Williams lifted Athletic Club to a 3-2 victory over Barcelona in the final of the 2020/21 Spanish Super Cup in Seville on Sunday.

Bilbao have now won the Spanish Super Cup for the third time (1984, 2015, 2021).

Barcelona were minutes away from claiming their first trophy in the Ronald Koeman era thanks to a pair of Antoine Griezmann goals that sandwiched an Oscar de Marcos strike.

But the game was dragged into extra-time following a late equaliser from Asier Villalibre.

Williams, a renowned Barcelona killer, would then produce his magic early in the extra frame to earn Athletic their first trophy since 2015, when they also defeated Barcelona in the Super Cup.

Things went from bad to worse for Barcelona as Lionel Messi received a straight red card deep in extra time for violent conduct.

It was Messi’s first ever red card in his Barcelona career.

After missing the semi-final against Real Sociedad due to injury, Messi was back in the starting XI, as was right-back Sergino Dest, who came in for Oscar Mingueza.
