Thailand have won the GolfSixes Cascais after beating England in a dramatic nearest-to-the-pin play-off at Oitavos Dunes in Portugal. In a first for the innovative tournament, Phachara Khongwatmai struck the crucial tee shot to within a few yards of the hole on the sixth to win it on a play-off for the Thai team, which also included Thongchai Jaidee.
The final was tied at 1-1 after six holes against English pair Tom Lewis and Paul Waring. Thailand became the third different winners of GolfSixes after triumphing 2-1 in the new tournament following two days of exciting competition.
After going up against different countries in the six-hole modified greensomes, it came down to Thailand, who had earlier knocked out defending champions Ireland, versus England on Saturday after the Thai duo had overcome Scotland and Spain in the latter stages on Saturday. Group A winners England, who defeated Sweden and Italy in the knockout stages, had to settle for runners-up in the matchplay event.
