The Ugandan football community is mourning the tragic death of David Owori, the 27-year-old captain of Uganda Premier League club SC Villa, who was fatally assaulted by a group of robbers armed with paving stones near his residence in Kampala on Tuesday night, August 4, 2026.
The attack took place in the Makindye division, a suburb of Kampala, as Owori was returning home.

According to reports from the BBC and The Guardian, Owori resisted a gang of street criminals trying to steal his mobile phone and other valuables.
However, the assailants struck him repeatedly with paving stones, rendering him unconscious before stealing his belongings and fleeing the scene.
Passersby discovered him and rushed him to a nearby clinic, after which he was transferred to Case Clinic in Kampala. He succumbed to life-threatening head injuries on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
Known affectionately as “Colgate”, the versatile midfielder and right-back led SC Villa to a historic, record 17th Uganda Premier League title in 2024, the club’s first league trophy in 20 years.

Owori represented Uganda’s national team, the Cranes, during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying phase and was a strong candidate for upcoming squads.
His senior career started in 2016 at Vipers Sports Club. He later played in Europe for Vélez CF in Spain and Utsiktens BK in Sweden before returning to SC Villa in 2023.
