Update: FIFA Sanctions Nigeria Over Abiola Stadium Invasion; CAF Clarifies Venue Can Host AFCON Qualifiers

Despite the decision of FIFA to impose sanction on MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) has approved the stadium to host the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone.

This was contained in a letter sent to the NFF on Sunday, May 1, 2022 by CAF.

Recall that on Monday, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee imposed sanctions on the Stadium for the misconduct of its fans during the world cup qualifying tie against Ghana in Abuja on May 29.

The world football ruling body in a statement on its official website detailed the reason for these sanctions as “order and security at matches (failure to implement existing safety rules and failure to ensure that law and order are maintained in the stadium, invasion of the field of play and throwing of objects)”.

However, with CAF approval, it finally puts to an end speculations that the edifice will be barred from hosting international matches in the wake of the crowd disturbances that trailed the second leg of the 2022 World Cup qualifier against Ghana.

FIFA has however ruled that the Nigeria vs Sierra Leone game will be played behind closed doors and also announced a fine of $150,000 on Nigeria for the disturbances after that World Cup qualifier.

  • The fine alone can pay the salaries of up to 300 Nigerian civil servants.football isn’t war.dome one has to win or lose at end of the 90 minutes of play.take it easy next time.

A stadium reflects the mood and character of the wider society. If there is no order and security in a country how do you expect people to be peaceful inside a football stadium?

This is not an update as Complete Sports tries to bamboozle Nigerians as usual.FIfA said upfront that the game against Sierra Leone can be played at the MKO Abiola Stadium BUT without spectators. It is s one-match ban.Now this is a lesson Nigeria must learn but refuses to learn.Never admit people into a stadium free-of-charge. Anybody valuing football must pay something to watch it, no matter how small.

  • The poor decision of sacking Rohr made by Sunday Dare and Pinnick has costed us and is still costing us emotionally, financially, psychologically etc.
These two men should just resign without further. With them still on their seats, Super Eagles will continue to go in circles. Mark this space

I think NFF must organize all Afcon. qualification at Godswill Akpobio in Uyo, because I think this staduim has witnessed many wins for Super Eageales on WQ for Russia 2018 and Afcon. qualification in Egypt 2019.So lm optimistic for this stadium to organize these matches; so NFF must undertake to reallocate.

  • @KingA tu dit la vérité mon frère j’ai suis fatigue avec nff.
