Another season in English football has gone and Pep Guardiola and Manchester City have lived up to their expectations to retain the Premier League title en route to completing the domestic treble. One man who played a monumental part in the Cityzens’ triumph is Sergio Aguero.
The Argentine scored 21 goals in the Premier League last season and now stands only behind Thierry Henry in the all-time Premier League Top Scorers list at the sixth position, who has a tally of 175.
Aguero is only twelve goals short of unseating the French legend and given his stupendous feat of scoring twenty or more goals in the past five seasons in English football’s top flight, it is hard to fathom him not being in the record books.
Manchester City plays an attacking brand of football, with the strikers getting enough support from midfield, something that has helped them cement first position in the Premier League Table in the last two seasons. Aguero is one of the most consistent players City have in their ranks, scoring twenty or more goals in the past five Premier League seasons.
Apart from completing a hat-trick of Premier League titles, something that only Manchester United has achieved, the Spaniard also has his eyes on clinching the elusive Champions League title. City’s Arabian owners bought him specifically to complete the puzzle, which has only the prime European piece missing.
Guardiola needs to be at his best in implementing his rotation policy then. And, that can see Aguero missing some crucial games in the Premier League and more importantly some crucial goals.
However, the competition from the club within is very low for Aguero. His understudy Gabriel Jesus scored only 7 goals in 29 appearances in the Premier League last season but was a tormenting figure in domestic cup competitions the previous season.
Guardiola may require Jesus to focus on the FA and the League Cup and let Aguero do the damage for Manchester City in Premier League and the Champions League.
Eight seasons running for the same club and two more to go, Sergio Aguero has cemented his name as a legend in English football. And, the record of being in the top 5 of all-time Premier League scorers is a feather he should obtain in his cap this season.
