Spain midfielder Gavi has dismissed recent criticism of Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of their highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash against Portugal.
Gavi defended the 41-year-old forward, asserting that the heavy scrutiny comes from outside fans, not his teammates.

Speaking with Mundo Deportivo, the Barcelona star stated that the Al Nassr star remains a big threat to Spain.
He urged Spain to remain cautious of the legendary striker as both nations prepare to face off in the knockout stage.
“I always hear that, but from people who are not on his team, from fans,” said Gavi.
“Those who are on his team will have magnificent respect for him. Obviously, Cristiano is one of the best players in history, and he can make the difference at any moment.”

When questioned about any pre-game contact with his Barcelona teammate, Portuguese defender Joao Cancelo, Gavi revealed that the two club partners have completely cut off communication in the buildup to the match, noting that both individuals are entirely isolated and focused on delivering a victory for their respective nations.
