2023 U-17 AFCON: Burkina Faso End Golden Eaglets’ World Cup Qualification Dreams

2023 U-17 AFCON: Burkina Faso End Golden Eaglets’ World Cup Qualification Dreams

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have crashed out of this 2023 U-17 AFCON in Algeria after they lost 2-1 to Burkina Faso in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

The result means the Eaglets will not be at this year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Burkina Faso complete Africa’s representatives at the World Cup after Senegal, Mali and Morocco booked their tickets.

The Eaglets had the first big chance of the game on eight minutes but Abubakar Abdullahi’s superb effort from outside the box hit the cross bar.

Seven minutes later Charles Agada saw his attempt also come off the woodwork from six yards.

But in the 44th minute Burkina Faso went 1-0 up through Aboubakar Camara who pounced following a poor clearance by Tochukwu Ogboji.

The Eaglets came out fired up for the second half but could not break down a resolute Burkina Faso side.

In the 56th minute they doubled their lead as Camara converted from the penalty spot.

Abubakar then pulled a goal back for the Eaglets in the 68th minute which turned out to be a consolation strike as the Burkinabes held on to seal qualification.

  • Clueless in attack, flat in midfield and porous in defence, that describe Ugbade’s boys today.

What left me most embarrassed was how Burkina Faso players continued pouring forward even when they were 2 goals up: they had no respect for Nigeria at all. They knew they could win convincingly.

At least Bosso wobbled and fumbled to world cup qualification. Ugbade could not even manage that – rubbish.

    I am gravely disappointed.

The same mistakes we saw all tournament downed the Eaglets today. Poor in defending 1 on 1 situation and limited ideas in attack not to talk of a non existent midfield.

Buhari caused it .. wen he give u appointment nobody can query u . I don’t know y.
See our coaches too .only standing and trapping ball coming out for game resumption.
No feedback study from online device . No match reader no assistant to walk up to him to pass idea. .even those watching on Facebook are saying something that a good coach wil quickly look into to win the game. But Nigeria is one man show . New government coming in could be bad . It going to be a one man one party one family show .
NigeriaAir don’t need all the struggle. Just play 5:4 1 against this bokinabe. They wil cry .. that y i wil always remember the with wicth doctor Mr Philip troussier.
He wil camp is team in Cote de voir for a week . Not Nigeria Lagos.
He wil fly his team in a day to match
        The results are there ..
But he got terminated because players complain of his rigid style of play .
They are not allowed to express themselves on the field..
See til today we have been expressing ourselves and losing to team less and lower status.
If. Dey continue like this 2026 world cup Wil be a mirage for nigeria forget about increase Noba of Africa countries slot.
Sao Tome is coming to shock super eagles in Nigeria.
        I fear for nigerian football

    • The gegenpress was non existent, there was no compression which is becoming a theme in our football and the limitations of this team is a huge problem but what baffles me is the lack of flair in our teams which makes me wonder what the technical director of the Nff and the board members have in store for our football. Honestly @deo OUR FOOTBALL NEEDS OVERHAULING. This current project or whatever is a gut wrenching failure.

      • Codex, i and some few others have been saying it on this platform that our football is gradually dying and the only way out of this problem is going back to school football like it used to be in the past. No one should expect anything good to come from our football until we real grassroot development and grassroot in Nigeria means our school system. The fake and underfunded academies we pretend to be running here and there cannot not help our football because we do not have the financial and technical reservoir like the Europeans we try to copy or emulate. Sports used to be a part of our school curriculum in Nigeria until politicians highjacked our sport administration and turned it into a money making department. They took out sports out of sports from our school system and pushed the government into hosting all manners of competitions because they wanted the to make billions off our sports. Anyone that truely love our sports especially football should join us to campaign for a return of our sports and football inparticular to the Nigerian school system like it was in the past otherwise the embarrassment is just starting, pretty soon Benin Republic, Togo, Niger etc shall be qualifying for both Caf and Fifa competitions ahead of our beloved country. You cannot give what you don’t have, you cannot abandon grassroot development and expect to beat those who are investing heavily in the development of their football from grassroot. Look the United States of America is a huge sporting Nations and she develops all her sports from her school system from grade schools to Tertiary institutions, some of their sports men and women go to the olympics from school win medals and go back to school, their college basketall, American fooball , etc are almost at the same level like the professional leagues. What about Jamaica, a country of just over 2 million people, they have been dominating the whole World in the sprints for many years now as a result of painstaking planing and development. Let us take our football back to shooland in just 4 to 5 years Nigeria will shake the whole World .

        • Well i was a part of the school program and it was a good thing for football here in Nigeria but times have changed, back then school kids were football crazy from the streets to the schools nowadays school kids are more interested in social media validation and video games so there’s got to be a cultural change or reset before investing in school sports,i still believe that the best way remains the academies BUT there should be solid investment and by that i mean creating a league for the academies and then incoperating it into the countries football pyramid or tiers as well as funding such leagues. But yeah good point though.

    • It was coming @deoo. The signs were all there, but some sentimental fans thought we were being impatient and didn’t know football. They labored to a 1-0 lucky win against Zambia, huffed and puffed against a tactically disciplined but less talented Moroccan side, and scraped a 3-2 win against a one-man team South Africa that got exposed 5-0 by Senegal.

How do you praise and make excuses for a team that can’t score goals, that’s all about pouring forward with no shape or discernable tactical play. Aside from Senegal, I think Burkina Faso and Mali have been on the ascendancy of late (Mali got the final in 2015 and the Burkinabes were third-place finishers in 2012). They deserve to go. Nigeria should deservedly stay home.

Imagine the records Ugbade would have made if he had coached the team to the WC and maybe gone far. The dude certainly knows how to spot good talent (having been one himself), but coaching? Nah. By the way, has he successfully coached any club side previously?

On a side note, Buhari’s 8-year was nearly a calamity for Nigeria in sports. Woe after woe. Heartbreak after heartbreak. All cos sai baba institutionalized nepotism and sacrificed meritocracy, not just in sports administration, but in national and economic life. The unspoken ‘policy’ trickled down and became a culture in government circles and appointments in the public service. The result is there for all to see. Can’t wait to see his back on May 29. May Buhari never happen to Nigeria again.

NFF and the Ministry of Sports owe the Nigerian public an urgent explanation.Nduka Ugbade must take a sabbatical He has been coaching only small boys for 20 years. It’s about time he was sent on a refresher course.

The Nff have done it again, folks when the nff stop interfering in coaches team selections, then our national teams will grow. I’m saying this because I still remember how this team performed in WAFU u-17 last year with the likes of miracle ogwor but sometime early this year,i saw coach Ugbade in Enugu scouting for more players for the under 17 and I was confused as to why he would want to change a team that qualified for the afcon only to realize that he was compiling a list for the NFF which was dubbed the NFF list.I thought it was a joke or maybe one of them scouting programs but when I saw the team that were called up in this afcon that i began to make sense of what happened in Enugu, furthermore the lack of cohesion in this team’s play confirmed my suspicion and now we are out.i hope the Nff are happy now.

The price Nigeria is paying to sustain Democracy in Nigeria is unbearable. Every sector in the country has been destroyed on the altar of democracy. The last stray that finally broke down the camel’s back is the destruction of our youth teams.its an eye sore for a counyry known world wide as a reservoir of raw football talents to present two aged grade teams (u20 and u17) without a single talent. Is Nigeria in Democracy to satisfy America and other super powers or make progress. If the answer is to make progress then we have to reset the government to default which is military rule to bring back the glory days. Any one who Is praying and hoping that Nigeria will make it under the present government is day dreaming because a close observation and assessment of the politicians who perpetrate this corrupt practices shows they are very callous, uncharitable and very unrepentant.

So Mr Ugbade , are you telling me that even you who played such a wonderfully youthful soccer could only form/ut up such a Team in a country of more than 230 Million people. Well everything for Naija now be say if you know like wetin you see or get go court.

    • Emecco 11 months ago

You guys all claimed that age grade tournament is not about winning the trophy but spotting and development of talents. So let’s develop the few talents we have spotted from this team and move on. The, u-20 World Cup is just days ahead, let’s shift our focus to that and let these teenagers be. They gave their all.

  • FRANCIS 11 months ago

Don’t even know where to begin, this players were playing for there own personal glory. Why the captain was on the bench, whom i feel is way better than abdullahi, didn’t start this match baffles me. And you took off Agada whom you could have paired with promise. Why they abandoned wing play which got them the first goal baffled me. Well we go again in 2 years.

  • Which personal glory!!! Me i don’t see any real talent here. What are we saying gan. Those burkinafaso were way more talented than our eaglet.

Creating 346 accurate passes without converting your chances is what you guys refers to as individual talents abegggiiiiii!!!

This team structure is not ok at all.

Oro Agba ti ko se ni owuro , ase ti o ba di oju ale. I told you before nothing good can come to Nigeria as long as APC is still ruling. God is annoyed seriously with you people. Killers ,elections riggers, wicked ,senseless and griddy set of people. You have not seen anything. Be expecting more for the next eight years.

  • AKOGUN FEMI JIMBOLA (JP) 11 months ago

Ojoro ko dara at all. Every single thing about APC is deceitful and due to your gullibility they found their way. Half baked president is to handover to drugbaron and bokoaharaminac vice president. I pity you all, you are going to suffer as if you have never suffered before.

  • Ako Amadi 11 months ago

Just look at the stats! Eaglets had 64 % possession, but fouled their opponents 21 times! The poor conversion rate shows they hardly knew what to do with the ball when they had it, but then resorted to kicking and biting their opponents to recover possession .

    LAMBORGHINI BURKI!
That is why we told them not to put the cart before the horse. People were already looking at a collision with Senegal, when Burki dey there dey wait.
Burkina Suffer don suffer wella for Naija hand in the past. Today, it is their turn to make Naija suffer.
Congrats to the Burki Burks. As for Nigeria, back to the drawing board we go!

The height of the arrogance that has come to typify Nigerian soccer fans. Dismissing Burkina Faso with a wave of the hand as if we are the only ones that have talents in the whole of Africa. I dont even know what we have that is making us puff up like over-yeasted dough.

We have nothing….no structures, no administration, no infrastructure….nothing. Our clubs cannot reach the group stages of CAF competitions comfortably, our overall homebased national team cannot qualify for CHAN comfortably, We dont even have ordinary standard football pitches (save for Godswill Akpabio who gifted us one from the coffers of his state), yet we go about raising our chest and bragging up and down as if we invented the game of football….as if we are an island of football talents.

We will blow this away, we will blow that away, even Senegal that has been visibly outstanding from GK to the CF, they said we will take them to the cleaners……LMAOOo. Who is in the cleaners now….LMAOoo??? Who just got blown out of the World cup….??

He whom the gods want to humiliate they first strike with pride.

      Pride goeth before a fall.

We must learn the art of humilty in fighting and winning our soccer battles in today’s African game. Nobody is ready to be an easy pick to be steamrolled by anybody

  • Dr TORAH 11 months ago

I thought they were our best national team but when I watched their game against Zambia and Morocco, I knew they won’t go far at all. Clueless attack, nonexistent creative midfielders and inept defences were the bane of their failure.

Inefficient short passes were only thing that made them dominant against other teams, the rate at which they missed golden scoring opportunities were grossly alarming. I am perturbed, what happened to the team that represented us in WAFU ZONE B, I am not sure it is the same team.

Uganda really messed us up big time on this one, seeing the team making the same tactical errors in all the four matches without creative initiatives from the bench. This put laudable question marks on Ugbade’s coaching intelligence . There was no landslide input from the bench to salvage the situations.

What really happened with the team at WAFU and AFCONU17? This question begs for more questions than answer to us as the team’s fan.
