AFCON 2023: Nwabali In Goal, Simon Misses Penalty As Guinea Beat Super Eagles 2-0 In Friendly

Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a 2-0 loss to Syli National of Guinea in a friendly game played in Abu Dhabi on Monday, Completesports.com reports.

The game saw Stanley Nwabali, William Troost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo, Zaidu Sanusi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Raphael Onyedika and Chidozie Awaziem were in the starting 11.

Also in the startling line-up were Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Umar Sadiq and Alhassan Yusuf.

On Sunday, the Eagles walloped a club side in Abu Dhabi 12-0 in a test game.

The Eagles had their first chance on goal in the 9th minute but Samuel Chukwueze failed to connect with a pass.

Two minutes later Moses Simon floated in a free-kick but Chidozie Awaziem could not connect with a header.

In the 13th minute Simon tried a shot but saw his effort blocked by Guinea defence.

Despite edging the early part of the game it was Guinea who took the lead on 14 minutes through Aguibou Camara.

The Eagles got a lifeline as a foul on Umar Sadiq saw the referee point to the penalty spot but Simon’s effort was saved on 20 minutes.

Sadiq went close in the 27th minute only to see his powerful header go just over the bar.

With three minutes left in the first half Chukwueze saw his attempt on goal go wide off the target.

Three minutes into the second half Awaziem almost drew the Eagles level on 47 minutes but was denied by the Guinean keeper.

After every effort to get back into the game it was Guinea who got on the score sheet again as they doubled their lead on 64 minutes thanks to Facinet Conté.

Simon tried to make amends for his earlier penalty miss but saw his shot saved by the Guinea keeper.

In the 73rd minute Jose Peseiro made three changes with Omeruo, Onyedika and Awaziem going off for Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka.

With eight minutes left Simon went close again but was denied by the opposition keeper.

On 83 minutes the Peseiro made another three changes with Joe Aribo replacing Yusuf, Ahmed Musa came in for Chukwueze while Lookman took the place of Simon.

THE DEFEAT SHALL BE CONTINUE TILL THE REST OF AFCON MATCHES.
*** WE SHOULD BE ASHAME IN PLAYING PRIMARY SCHOOL BOY & WIN THEM 12-0 for preparation for AFCON.
*** WE SHOULD BE ASHAME OF TAKING BENCH-WARMER, INCONSISTENT, IRREGULAR PLAYERS TO AFCON COMPETITION
*** WE SHOULD BE ASHAME OF TAKING INJURY PLAYER(IHEANACHO) TO AFCON when there are many fit player in local league and Europe.

They will continue to be humiliated and suffer for their evil ways. Our learned Dr Drey and all good loving Nigerians said repeatedly and begged them not fire Oga Rohr. Here we are. The least football Country are beating the super chicken in football. Folks, l am not watching any of the super chicken matches and urging you not to bother your good self to watch the 3 matches they may play. Why must you when they have no Iheanacho, no BONIFACE, no Ndidi, no Orban. no coach. Who is there? only Osimhen and he can’t do everything by himself as we all know.

      • MONKEY POST 4 months ago

Am telling you @EDOMAN they must pay for all the atrocities melted out on GENERAL ROAR

Ah….the New Enyeama has started shipping in goals already….???

    • Dr. Drey 4 months ago

Going by the match report above, we were knocked out twice on the counter.
Guinea has just served us the first dish of what we should expect from our opponents at AFCON.

We want wingplay, we want 442, we want 94 squad style of play in 2024….there you have it folks.

My biggest pity goes to whoever will man our goalposts in Cotedivoire….and I pray seriously it would not be Francis Uzoho. God has save Maduka this time around. I pray He also preserves francis. Those 2 boys have been through a lot already.

      • My Friend keep quiet. 4-4-2 is old formation, your inept coach Eguavoen tried it against Tunisia at the last nations cup and he lost. A good opposition coach knows what to do to clip your wings.

Uzoho (and Maduka) has been the fall guy for every bad performance of the SE since the last AFCON and I’m just praying Peserio doesn’t start him at this one for the boy’s sanity’s sake

  • Glory 4 months ago

Good practice game. Just how I wanted it and also how Togo defeated our Super studded atlanta dream team 3-0 right in our mothers room before we got serious and went on to conquer the world. I would have been really worried if we had won this friendly match. Really happy it has cancelled out that over confidence that might have been building up over that false 12 – 0 victory.

    • Thumbs up brotherman Glory. You are spot on. But those who saw the game said Nwabili exhibited Kerewa Kerewa goalkeeping with his generosity and basket like tendencies.

I hope you don’t want Kerewa Kerewa goalkeeping in the Afcon.

      • Glory 4 months ago

Brodaman Deo, while I will not write nwabali off yet, he is not my choice keeper to sort out our goal keeping problem. Racheed would have been a better choice. Anyway nwabali’s failing to impress will ease the pressure on Uzoho, who has to grab this opportunity with all seriousness and confidence. To be honest I see real positive things through this deceiving defeat. LET’S JUST RELAX AND ENJOY.

Thanks @Glory you are on point let the real game begin. This is a wake up call that we should not underrate any team. This result is fantastic if we had beaten them. Silly we would have believed that all is well.

      • Glory 4 months ago

@ Thanks @ ndubest. Some forumites here are strongly wishing SE to fail if only to fan their ego. How selfish?
But I will support Peseiro and SE to the end just like I did with Rohr, Eguavoen, and will do with whoever comes next. It is not about the manager but about Nigeria. I will never ever join our opponents to pull nigeria down irrespective of the criminals managing our football. .

  • Stanley Nwabili is a decent goalkeeper who needs time to step up to the demands of this level of football. Those who watched the match said he did his best but his best wasn’t good enough today.

Let’s not read anything to the overall outcome of this match as we had a few rookies woven into an experimental formula.

3-4-3 needs time to work. 4-2-4 will do for now with an experienced goalkeeper with world cup expertise manning the goal.

If it were Uzoho in goal, the outcome of this match would have been more favourable for Nigeria.

    • Larry 4 months ago

@deo, I don’t just understand your analysis in recent weeks. You accepted the fact that Nwabali stepped up and you are now talking about Uzohobasket who had nothing left to show.
Why did you think Uzohobasket would have fared better ?

      • Experience, Larry. I think Uzoho will draw on his wealth of experience to take Nigeria places. I think his days of making mistakes might be behind him.

U should witness the rebirth of Uzoho in days to come.

        • Larry 4 months ago

@deo, my man, rebirth you say, okay finger crossed I hope you are ready to own up to this.

    • Chima E Samuels 4 months ago

Stanley is like our local league goal keepers. Rasheed is the real deal and also the coach formation of 5 at the back is very weird and sometimes awaz comes to the midfield. It is just funny how the team has to player to transition from defence to attack and Umar is not a consistent player. I am feeling sick how did we get it wrong? We can’t hire Mosiame and pay off this fraud.

  • UNTIL THIS COACH DESTROY NIGERIA FOOTBALL BEFORE YOU WILL SACK HIM

CURROPT NFF STILL KEEPING THE NONESENS

COACH THAT HAS NO PATERN OF FOOTBALL SINCE HE TOOK OVER NIGERIA FOOTBALL TEAM I NEVER SEE ANY CHANGES

SEE THE BOY 18 YEARS BOY WHO SCORED THE SECOND GOAL

EMMANUEL AMUNEKE SHOULD HAVE TAKE OVER FROM THIS STUPID COACH LONG TIME AGO

BUT THE CURROPTION IN NIGERIA FOOTBALL HOUSE STILL KEEPING HIM

NIGERIANS SHOULD EXPECT HEARTBREAKING IN AFCON

    • Larry 4 months ago

You spoke well until you included Amuneke. Amuneke needs to clean up his resume, go coach Rangers or Abia Warriors win the local league, take the lical players to the semifinal of CHAN. Then he can be considered as a coach. For now, there are many local, African, and European coaches ahead of him.
The only reason he can coach the team is to be used as an agent of doom and corruption in the team.
Oliseh,Egbo, Olofin, Finidi, Remo coach are ahead of Amuneke.

      • Chima E Samuels 4 months ago

Mosiame is our next coach let finidi qualify for Caf Champions league group stage first.

        • Field Marshall. General. Sir Johnbob 4 months ago

And if not Mosimane then let’s look at Shola Ameobi – a real son of the soil who has been Director of football at Newcastle Utd for a few years now and has racked up quite an extensive knowledge – even though I must say that Mosimane must still be ahead of Ameobi simply because he has operated in the role at the same levels and we know he is ruthless, ambitious and very good – whether good enough for the SE job is still open to debate and can only be determined by him actually being given the opportunity to do the job.

My real instinct would be to give Mosimane the job and mandate that Ameobi must be his assistant, so we can groom Ameobi to step up in the future – Having said all this, it obviously will remain to be seen if Shola would even consider taking the role – As we all know, it has proved to be nothing but a “Poison Chalice” to date for all and sundry.

    • God forbid Amuneke.

      • Abode 4 months ago

Amuneke that failed woefully with an Egyptian club side (let me get the name) and an abysmal performance with Tanzania national team. NFF needs to get it right once and for all. amuneke ké?

  • Larry 4 months ago

Gradually, the nff and pessaro will begin to realize the level of injustice and its consequences.
Adeleye has been the best SE GK for the past 2 seasons.
Balogun remains the best defender SE defender.
If Pessaro was really serious about addressing the GK problem, why not begin the integration of Nwabili with the Dubai toothless team to get him ready for this match. It is obvious that Uzohobasket is his prefered choice and the reason for this will be known someday.
The good thing is the pool of players that will be chopped from the team will increase after AFCON. A technically sound and honest coach would not invite 50% of the players on this team.

    • Hi Larry,

I share your frustration but, with all due respect, Uzoho is not a basket. He is a top quality goalkeeper with a major shortcoming that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Stanley Nwabili shopped 2 goals today. Personally I rate Olorunleke Ojo ahead of Nwakabili and I am not being jingoistic.

      • Larry 4 months ago

@deo, your man na basket, even Agbonevbare didn’t commit more blunders than him. A top Gk warming the bench in an average league. Top GKs are the first choice of their team, top GKs don’t go from playing in La Liga to warming the bench in La average Cyprus league.

        • Larry you gat time exchanging convo with that fake deo, I’ve been reading from that dude for sometimes now, and the more I feel he is not the main logistic and onpoint soccer analyst we have here the more I’m convince I’m right with my thought, the real deo we all read from here dnt speak with his both mouth on the same post, ignore this deo pls.

          • Femi na me o jare. Like my dearest brother Monkey Post will say, ‘too much talk no dey full basket’.

            🙂

      • Larry why are you talking like this? Anyone can fall on hard times. Yes I agree with you that Uzoho has fallen on hard times recently but dead bones shall rise again.

By the time Uzoho starts delivering deft goalkeeping outputs, you will be the first to praise him to highest heavens.

Uzoho will emerge as a candidate of best goalkeeper in this tournament.

        • Golden Child 4 months ago

Do you know him personally? I am struggling to understand where this optimism and confidence is coming from. Does Uzoho have a twin brother that you are referring to or its the same Uzoho?

Hahaha Golden Child, Deo has developed this bizarre sense of humor nowadays.
            He is only joking.

Blessed are those who do not hope in Nigeria for they shall not be disappointed.

  • This is just a friendly. And the starting eleven were not the regulars. But I have always talked about attackers missing chances. From this report if the had converted half of their chances. But this is just a friendly.

I love ine thing about this report. They created chances. Something tells me this team will do very at afcon.

    • You’re right. I noticed he didn’t play any of the Victors (Osimhen and Boniface), but still, this coach keeps disgracing Nigeria. Does any Nigerian coach have a poorer record yet? See what Pinnick dumped on us and retired with NFF loot?

  • Abdul Handsy 4 months ago

EaglesTracker All these things happening to the super eagles of Nigeria today didn’t start today…. It started the day Amaju Melvin Pinnick solely decided to bring this dumb Ass called José Peseiroo to punish us…

How can you hire a coach without track records to coach a team like super eagles. It’s like you guys don’t know this coach, he is a cursed coach.

If you doubt me then, check his track record na!

Amaju Melvin Pinnick May God Almighty never seize his punishment on you and your entire family who benefitted from your corruptible acts in the NFF.

  • Bobby 4 months ago

He only has less than one month on his contract. Nigeria cannot go far at the tournament with this kind of football. I wonder why the NFF still kept this coach who was chased out in South America and elsewhere for poor results!

  • I believe the loss is blessing in disguise. SE will get to the semi-final.

  • Why have decided to give us heart attack this month. A country where nothing works. This coach still doesn’t know his first eleven. Well it’s good we are seeing so dat we no go even bother to vex bcs its already written.

  • Bobby 4 months ago

Get to the semis with this kind of coach? look, African football has improved drastically. It’s quite evident that we do not have a good coach. The NFF got us into this mess. This man is not supposed to get close to the Super Eagles, talk more of coaching the team. Look at his result since he started handling this team.

  • Lollipops 4 months ago

@ Deo and Glory, with all these poor results Peseiro is choking Nigeria with, I would advise you guys to keep your expectations low so that you guys don’t feel disappointed.

Nigeria as a country is facing “LEADERSHIP” Crisis. If we really have good leaders that listen to the people and willing to do the right things for the growth of the country, Peseiro will be gone by now.

    • Glory 4 months ago

@ Lollipop. Thanks for your advice but sorry brodaman, I am a born optimist and today’s result has even made me more optimistic. Anyway I am advicing to choose between winning all friendly matches and winning the AFCON CUP. FOR I CHOOSE TO WIN THE AFCON,friendly matches I maintain, remain immaterial and only answers that name, FRIENDLY.

  • Bobby 4 months ago

@Glory, not 3 nil. It was 3-1 against the Nigerian team but then again, the coach understood the mentality of Nigerian players and that was why he went on to win the Olympic gold. We even held the Egypians draw in their own soil during the qualifiers. Bonfrere Jo was highly technical and tactical and he defeated the heavyweights. Can you compare him with this useless coach? Of course not.

    • Glory 4 months ago

@ Bobby, while not wait until after AFCON to know if this coach understands our players mentality too? Also even if it was 3-1, hope you know Togo paraded only homebased players against our Super star studded atlanta dream team and game was right there in Nigeria. WE NIGERIANS MOST TIMES ARE OUR OWN PROBLEM. LET THE COACH FAIL TO WIN THE MAIN TOURNAMENT FIRST, BEFORE DESTROYING HIM. AFTERALL ALL THESE CRITICISM WILL NOT GET NFF TO REPLACE HIM NOW.

  • Bobby 4 months ago

@Lollipops, absolutely. The man is very poor in technique and tactics. Check out his results elsewhere. No national federation in their right senses would allow such a man to coach their national team. Local coaches are even far better than him. Yet, the corrupt NFF still went ahead to hire him.

Portuguese coaches are known to be smart. Take a look at Egypt for example. But the NFF due to corruption went on and brought Nigeria an expired Portuguese whose knowledge of football is already outdated.

    • Chibuike 4 months ago

NFF using that Pajero coach to scam Nigerians! Where is EFCC? Abi na only where yahoo Boyz dey una dey get power?

  • He obviously didn’t learn from the friendly and World Cup qualifiers and then failed to update the team.

Just keeping doing the same thing and expect something different.

This team will come out in the 1st round , 1 loss and 2 draws

    • With Paseiro in charge. Nigeria won’t qualify for the World Cup 1005 confirmed. You can take that to the bank.

  • But the concern is that this defeat is coming on the heels of lackluster performances in the WC qualifiers. It’s worrying, to be frank. This man and his 4-2-4 formation na wa. 4-3-3 would have been better for this team. Fingers crossed.

  • Papafem 4 months ago

I hope this result will spark them to life in the competition. I like it when we get results like this before a major tournament because there’s a way the players talke it personal when the real competition begins. Friendly matches leading to Atlanta 96, France 98, Afcon 2013, and the rest were like this. But when the chips were down, SEs turned the tables.

My only fear is the coach. It’s like the only system he can ever play in this world is 442. We are so unfortunate to have an obsolete, obstinate, rigid and technically bereft gaffer. He may be our biggest undoing at the nation’s cup, mark my words. Did you see the kind of changed he effected in that match? 6 players in the last 25 minutes as if he was sleeping on duty before then.

My second concern is the midfield and that apparent lack of creativity. Breaking it down, no creative midfielder started that match. All I saw were the trio of onyeaka, abdullahi and an improvised Awaziem. So how exactly were we expecting the strikers to score goals? I didn’t even mention the fact that Awaziem is never a midfielder meaning our Oga is still experimenting, 5 days to our first match. Another absurdity. Iwobi is about the only player you can call a creative player in that team. He picks his passes so well and so good in tight situations. And the form he carries to rhat tournament is so good. But for sure if he’s suspended or copped an injury, we will revert to our defensive midfielders who are more wired to defend than to attack. This now begs the question why the man called Peseiro failed to find a place for a player like Nwakali to at least be a back up for Iwobi.

We will sorely miss Balogun. I watched his last three matches for Rangers and I must confess, we don’t have anyone in the national team now called a defender who can stand his reading of the game, maturity on the ball, marking and intelligence. None! May I ask Peseirp why he didn’t select that guy? Not even in the 41-man list! What did Balogun to deserve being dropped? Why is no one talking about it? That defence as things stand now, lacks leadeship. And they’ll continue to conceed goals until we do the right thing.

My final concern is the goalkeeping department. Hmmmm……let me just ret my case for now. Wishing them all the best.

    • Chima E Samuels 4 months ago

Balogun has high win ratio with Nigeria but our coaches are good at snubbing real players. Without Iheanacho we can’t score against tough opponents.

    • Balogun stood up for the players that nff should “pay up” outstanding allowances and nff in turn gradually axed him from the squad.

  • pompei 4 months ago

Haaaa, PESE OOO, TROUBLE IN THE AREA.
If you put a gun to this man’s head, he will still play 4-4-2.
It’s up to our individual players to bail us out in this tournament, because this Oshodi Okrika coach wey we get so, make agbada no hook barbwire!
Just like it happened in Atlanta 1996 Olympics, when individual talent won us the trophy, individual talent is our only hope now.
Osimhen, Boni, and the rest have to bring out their talents, because nothing will be forthcoming from this coach. Even when he speaks, nobody understands him. Na so so EH, EH, EH.
    Which kain wahala be dis?

  • Bobby 4 months ago

Nigeria are not known for playing 4-2-4 formation but 4-3-3. Even the Late Stephen Keshi and Amodu Shaibu used that. No one would employ this coach to handle its national team. Never! He doesn’t understand the mentality of its players for over two years on the job. He doesn’t know his starting 11 for over two years he’s been coaching this team. He doesn’t know that midfield is the engine room of that team. He also doesn’t know that you cannot win AFCON without a very strong defence. We’ve conceded goals from the matches we played with other nationality teams and he is giving Nigerians the false illusion he is going to win the Nations Cup in order to believe him to stay on the job. I only blame the NFF for retaining this crap coach. He only talks and talks without positive results.I really don’t know why the vagabonds at the NFF decided to mess things up up to this level.

Take a look at the Super Falcons and the type of football they play? Take a look at the foreign coach who handled the team. At least he had over 68% winning rate and that’s what football is all about with the talented players we have.

Believe me, there are coaches that you would give this team, you can go on and sleep because the results would be there.

  • pompei 4 months ago

As some have said, I hope this result will be a much needed wake up call for the team.
Thankfully, this is just a friendly. But as our pipo say, na for morning we dey take no how the day go be.
The worrying signs have been there for a while now. A coach that is tactically bereft will not become tactically savvy overnight. Miracle like that will not happen.
Our wastefulness in front of goal, goalkeeping issues, worrying lack of fire in the belly, inflexible tactics, among many other issues, have been there for all to see. No be today.
On top of all that, we have the most incompetent, inept football house on the planet.
It’s up to the players to dig deep on an individual level and salvage this dream of winning a 4th Afcon.
NFF ONIGBESE is more of a hindrance rather than a help, and the journeyman of a coach they hired for us, the less said the better.
    Best wishes to the team.

    • Up to the players? Lol. Who has the magic wand? As far as it is most of the players that crashed out against Tunisia at the last AFCON, played against Ghana without scoring from open play after 3 hours in Qatar qualifiers and played two drab draws in current WC qualifiers, forget inspiration from the players this time around.

No savior and since I used to say eagles is like a cult, bulk of those “unbenchable” players will play the tournament as starters.

Satan is crafty and wicked sha. In peserios mind, those who walloped “unknown” yesterday would perform better than who played against Guinea.

He is in for a shock on Sunday. I don’t pity him. I want a reset of the male national team.

The majority of the first team didn’t play against Guinea tho.

From Uzoho to Lookman to Osimhen to Iwobi to Semi to Bruno to Aina to Bassey.

So, we should all calm down.

    • Did you not smell a rat with that decision? I said. Who plays “second team” against a serious foe when players have only been in camp for less than a week in the name of fine-tuning tactics?

Coach only wanted to “disgrace” the so called “debutants” that Nigerians actively sought so that he could say “I told you so” but he is only postponing the evil day for his first choice players.

      • Ayphillydegreat 4 months ago

I don’t think there’s any disgrace in a friendly game. We need depth in the team that’s why he needs to test players he hasn’t seen yet. Do you know how good Guinea is?? They have Guirassy and Keita with some top talents coming up therefore, it’s not a bad result for players playing together for the first time.

I don’t expect much from the coach, but he’s trying different formations in this training camp. Whether that will help the team I don’t know. However, the SuperEagles can never be underestimated in an AFCON.

  • Omo9ja 4 months ago

You can not give what you don’t have. Oga Rohr has tried it. He failed, and now oga Paseiro.

I said I did not expect too much from the gaffer and his employer. People think I was joking right. The result is coming in now.

Nigerians are beginning to witness the reality of life.

This Paseiro will destroy Super Eagles.

Is that the gaffer fault no. The government has no choice but to get Amaju, Diko, and Sheyi arrested. They can’t destroy our football and go like that.

Amaju is spending our money to buy expensive cars, although we don’t have government because the government also corrupts.

In one word, Super Eagles do not have a coach and FA period.

As I said before now, Nigerians should not expect anything from Oga Paseiro and his employer. If they do Kai, they are on their own ooo. I have warned you, Nigerians. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!

No genuine Nigeria fan wishes for the team to fail at the Afcon. We all want Nigeria to win the trophy. I personally want that, so I can use it to troll our Ghanaian enemy who has made himself a complete nuisance in this forum. He knows himself.
To even suggest that some fans want Nigeria to fail, just to massage their ego, is ludicrous and illogical.
The biggest boost to a fan’s ego is if his team wins the trophy!
Defeat is too painful for any football fan to wish it on himself and his team. Most fans, including myself, would happily accept that we were wrong, as long as we win the trophy. Who cares about ego? Can you cook and eat ego?
What we care about is for the trophy to be heading to Nigeria at the end of the tournament.
And from what we have seen so far, it’s not encouraging at all.
The fact that we used mostly reserve players does not make this defeat less disappointing. Our reserves should be just as good as the starting eleven. If that is not the case, then what exactly has Peseiro been doing all this while?
For Guinea to beat our team B so comfortably is worrying! And how do we know that Guinea themselves did not play their own reserve players?
Hmm. We can only hope for the best!

I did not mean you, Selfmade.
It’s that YAWS infested loud mouth that I’m talking about.
Talking about Nigeria coming last, I’m afraid we can’t be too sure this time! Hahaha, the confidence level in the squad has hit a all time low. Let’s hope they give us a pleasant surprise!

@Mr samuels and co – just in case my initial post does not appear above or disappears again as they seem to be doing on CSN these days lol, please read again below –

Nigeria have good players but NFF is corupt, listen to Oparanozie interviews. I told you, those players will fuck NFF up. How can you employ a coach with bad record! So Nigeria don’t deserve Dunga of Brazil or any world class coach with pedigree? Why NFF is corupt like this? People should stop abusing players and face those evil men in NFF

  • Not bad under normal circumstances trying out this kind of new system because we know that this heavy attacking system can be countered by bigger teams.

I hope he has enough tactical acumen to make impact. I’m sha forever glad that Rohr is gone.

My logic is, if Eguaveon got the Eagles to the knockout stage with a method that is similar to Peseiro’s, then this team should get to at least the quarters.

I think Peseiro’s style is a bit better than Eguaveon’s.

    Cheers
