Bundesliga 2022/23: Huge Anticipation Welcomes Matchday 2 After 33-Goal Opening Day

The Bundesliga returned with a bang last weekend, with 33 goals over 9 games, and there is a huge anticipation ahead of the match day 2 this weekend.

Consistently the highest scoring league in Europe, there were debut Bundesliga goals for the likes of Sadio Mane and Jordan Siebatcheu, while Ritsu Doan marked his second spell in Germany by getting on the scoresheet for new club SC Freiburg.

FC Bayern Munich will hope Senegalese superstar Sadio Mane can pick up where he left off on his stunning Bundesliga debut when the reigning Bundesliga champions take on VfL Wolfsburg on Matchday 2.

A summer arrival from Liverpool, Mane immediately looked at home in Julian Nagelsmann’s line-up as he found the net in the emphatic 6-1 opening-game win for Bayern at Eintracht Frankfurt. He then led the post-match celebrations from amongst the away fans, a scene the supporters will hope to repeat with their new hero on his Allianz Arena bow as Bayern seek to extend their unbeaten seven-year streak against the Wolves in Sunday’s late kick-off.

While Bayern shrugged off the summer departure of Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland leaving Borussia Dortmund does not seem to have done them much harm either. Marco Reus got the matchwinner in the defeat of fellow top-four challengers Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the weekend.

The BVB icon’s clinical eye for goal will be required again as Edin Terzic’s men make a testing trip to SC Freiburg – themselves heavy 4-0 winners on Matchday 1 – for the Friday night curtain- raiser.

Leverkusen will look to bounce back at home to FC Augsburg, who were Freiburg’s victims, on Saturday. Just across the Rhine, 1. FC Köln — 3-1 victors over newly promoted FC Schalke 04 — face a tricky encounter with Leipzig, who were surprisingly held in Stuttgart in their first 90 minutes of the campaign despite the prolific Christopher Nkunku firing them into an early lead.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and VfL Bochum 1848 — beaten in Mönchengladbach and at home to 1. FSV Mainz 05 respectively on Matchday 1 — meet in Sinsheim with the visitors eyeing a third successive win against André Breitenreiter’s team. The former Schalke coach’s return to the Bundesliga dugout was ruined by Daniel Farke’s successful league debut for Borussia Mönchengladbach — the Foals’ summer appointment now pits his wits against the current Royal Blues’ boss, Frank Kramer, in Saturday’s late kick-off between German giants.

SV Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart meet on Saturday in the hope of building on their opening-game draws, while Frankfurt will ease the pain of their Matchday 1 bruising if they can hand Hertha Berlin a second successive loss. Sandro Schwarz’s men had their confidence dented by a derby defeat at 1. FC Union Berlin, who have lost just one and won four of their six meetings with Mainz since arriving in the top flight in 2019, a record they will aim to embellish in Sunday’s early game.

Hamburger SV narrowly failed to end their four-year absence from the top flight last season — if results go their way, Tim Walter’s men could find themselves top of the Bundesliga 2 table if they can see off a DSC Arminia Bielefeld side that has lost its first three matches in the second tier since dropping out of the top flight last term. But HSV can only move to the summit if surprise unbeaten leaders SSV Jahn Regensburg and promoted 1. FC Kaiserslautern slip up against Hannover 96 and SC Paderborn respectively across the weekend.
