De Bruyne opened scoring on 12 minutes as he let Riyad Mahrez’s pass from the right roll across his body before unleashing a thunderous left-footed shot which crashed in off the crossbar.

Just six minutes after De Bruyne’s opener, Gundogan made it 2-0 by calmly rolling past the Monchengladbach ‘keeper and into the bottom left corner after being played in by Phil Foden.

And in Spain, 13-time winners Real Madrid defeated Atalanta 3-1 to qualify for the quarter-finals 4-1 on aggregate.

Karim Benzema put Madrid 1-0 up in the 34th minute before Sergio Ramos scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-0.

With seven minute remaining in the game Atalanta pulled a goal back through Luis Muriel before Marco Asensio ended any hope of a comeback by netting Madrid’s third goal.

Action will continue in the Champions League on Wednesday when Bayern Munich will entertain Lazio while Atletico Madrid will be guests to Chelsea.
