Boxing trainer Ben Davison has brushed off Tyson Fury’s tongue-in-cheek label of “traitor” after officially reuniting with Anthony Joshua ahead of the pair’s long-awaited all-British heavyweight mega-fight at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on December 11.
Davison shares a storied history with Fury, having cornered him for five fights, including his dramatic first clash with Deontay Wilder in 2018.

More importantly, Davison played a pivotal role in guiding the former two-time world champion back into ring-ready shape following a well-documented period of severe depression and substance abuse, before the duo parted ways in late 2019.
Years later, Davison joined forces with Joshua, overseeing impressive victories against Otto Wallin and Francis Ngannou. Although they temporarily separated following Joshua’s defeat to Daniel Dubois in September 2024, after which ‘AJ’ briefly linked up with Oleksandr Usyk’s setup for stoppage wins over Jake Paul and Kristian Prenga, the 37-year-old coach has returned to lead Joshua’s corner for the December blockbuster.
Speaking to Playbook Boxing (powered by Betway), Davison downplayed Fury’s playful accusations of betrayal.
“I think it’s tongue-in-cheek. I’ll be honest, I don’t think he cares who works with AJ. But most importantly, I spent a lot of time with him and I think deep down he knows what type of person I am. I think he would say, ‘I know Ben’s a good guy.'”
“He’s smart enough to understand that boxing is a business, and hopefully he feels the same way I do where it doesn’t have an impact.

“He could say whatever he wants to—call me this, call me that. It wouldn’t change how things are because deep down I know he’s a good guy.”
Maintaining a clean record of personal relationships across his career remains a priority for the elite trainer as fight night approaches. “I’ve never fallen out with any ex-fighters that I’ve worked with, and it’s important to me that stays the same,” Davison concluded. “At the same time, I’ve got a fantastic relationship and a lot of love for AJ as well.”
