Exclusive:Why NFF Must Learn From Senegal’s 2021 AFCON Success –Akpoborie

Former Nigerian forward, Jonathan Akpoborie has advised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to learn from the success of the Teranga Lions of Senegal in the just concluded 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Recall that Senegal won their first AFCON trophy after overcoming the Pharaohs of Egypt in Sunday’s final via penalty shootouts at the Olembé stadium of Yaounde.

However, the former Wolfsburg striker told Completesports.com in an interview that the NFF must learn to give Nigerian coaches the opportunity to handle the Super Eagles just like Senegal gave Aliou Cissé the chance to excel.

“I am really proud of Senegal’s victory over Egypt considering the fact that it’s their first Africa Cup of Nations title,” Akpoborie, a former Super Eagles star who won bronze at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations told Completesports.com.

“However, one thing I think the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) must learn from their victory is that they gave Aliou Cissé the free hand to tinker the team to success.

“Again, the NFF should use this opportunity to offer Austine Eguavoen the Super Eagles job on a permanent basis and ensure that they appoint capable assistant coaches that will be of great services to him.”

  • Exactly the position of true Nigerians Mr. Akpoborie. I see Eguavoen S.eagles ruling the World in Qatar but hopefully NFF will appoint him on permanent basis. At least 6 years.

Haba Sam! 4 years is ok. It is clear Austin Eguavoen is leading us to Qatar.

I support 4 years too. But let the Minister of Youth Development and Sports try and get Sunday Oliseh to join the team. Oliseh is very outspoken.

Coach Cisse of Senegal is a practical example to all the FAs in Africa. The truth will always be coach Eguavoen needs years on the job.

If only mr bribe eater will invite best legs. The Senegalese invited their best legs. My two Kobo.

    • @Williams,
I have told you time without numbers to stop pointing accusing fingers at someone when you don’t have facts to back yourself up. It’s an act of foolishness.

      • Bribery and corruption; the bane of Nigerian coaches;it has recked some of them in the persons of ; Sia1, Salisu and perhaps keshi.. Kechi in the sense that, he collected money from some agents going into the world cup in a deal to enlist thier players into the world cup roster after winning the 2013 AFCON..instead of sticking to the AFCON champions, he faltered by derailing; altering the squad ..

Coruption won’t make them work well enough.. Perhaps our scouting/technical department has to be manned by a character of notable expertise and integrity of international standards..

We have to arrest currupt practices referred to as; the Nigeria factor..

THE ONLY THING I CAN ADVICE NFF TO LEARN FROM SENEGAL TEAM IS TO EMPLOY FOREIGN TRAINERS AS SUPER EAGLE ASSISTANCE COACHES. FROM THIS, THE TECHNICAL CREWS FROM BENCH WILL ABLE TO COMMAND RESPECT FROM PLAYERS. NOT THE OUR LOCAL COACHES THAT ARE FASHION-MODEL, BRIBE-TAKERS,U-20 W/CUP FAILURE.

  • It will be so nice if Eguavoen and Amunike can work together and NFF to employ foreign trainer like Senegal.

We have young talented players that can make Nigerians proud in any competition.

    God bless Nigeria.

  • Guys first of all three blows for senegal senior national team, senegalese team has just shown the other teams in africa how to be consistent, i could remember how these same team got to the last final 2yrs ago and after 2yrs they won it that is what i called consistency oozing from these Senegalese team i admired the team so much nff should learn from them how to prepare a team and our players should also learn how to be passionate whenever they put on super eagles jerseys Eguavouen i hope you’re watching.

    Corruption.
    Tribalism.
    Nepotism.
    Invitations based on quota system.
    100 caps craze.
    Use of substandard stadia.
Poor funding/disappeared funds. Poor planning/lack of plans (if you fail to plan how to succeed, you have already planned to fail!).
    Neglect of functional stadia.
    Unfairness to coaches.
Doing the wrong things and expecting good results.

These and many more are the vices NFF is swimming in. And these are the vices that are stopping us from growing.

What is there to learn from Senegal? They have just won their first AFCON after trying for decades. I wonder why Nigeria’s ex-international footballers make unintelligent statements

True talk, in as much as i want Senegal to win the AFCON after many disappointments, but i don’t see them as a world class team, they are just ok; infact , all the teams in this concluded AFCON are just average, especially those going to the world cup, i have my fears at the world cup. The only team that was more impressive was Nigeria ( forget about Tunisia error).Nigeria just need to bring their strikers back, that was our undoing at the AFCON. This is my honest opinion.

There are a lot of positives to learn from the Senegalese team:1. Determination 2. Consistency 3. Teamspirit 4. Focus 5. Good preparation.6. Well assembled team. Super eagles lack all of the above.

  • Note that Cise did not just win the Afcon at a go. He was retained for some number of years before the success came. Not by fire-brigade approach without good planning.

Don’t mind them they want short cut to success. Sharp sharp. Mentality of an average Nigerian

  • @Ako AMADI there is alot to learn from these senegalese team if you removed sentiment you see that these team has been consistent for some years now two afcon final not a child play of which super eagles don’t have.
