Super Eagles legend Peter Rufai has been reported dead, Completesports.com reports.
The former goalkeeper passed away on Thursday morning after a long illness, according to Radio Nigeria.
Though his family has yet to officially announce his passing, a senior official in the Lagos State Government has confirmed the sad news.
Nicknamed “Dodo Mayana’, Rufai is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers Nigeria has ever produced.
The 61-year-old played a crucial role for the Super Eagles side that won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia in 1994.
He represented Nigeria at two FIFA World Cups (1994 in United States of America, and 1998 in France).
Rufai made 65 appearances for the three-time African champions during his active days.
He also played for top clubs like Stationery Stores in Lagos, Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands, and Deportivo La Coruña in Spain.
